Saving Energy with Solar Manufacturing
At Nature’s Sunshine, we are deeply committed to environmental stewardship and sustainability. We recognize utilizing clean energy sources coupled with reductions in energy use through professional management is essential both to conserve natural resources and protect the planet that provides the healing botanicals we rely on. That’s why our corporate office is powered by onsite solar panels accounting for 50% of energy consumed onsite. And, that’s why we set an ambitious goal to convert our 260,000-square-foot Spanish Fork, Utah manufacturing facility to 100% renewable solar energy by 2023.
Through partnerships with local solar companies, extensive planning, upgrades to our electrical infrastructure, and hands-on professional energy management, we achieved this goal a year ahead of schedule in 2022. We also installed energy-efficient lighting sensors and made HVAC improvements to limit non-essential energy use.
Since our full solar conversion in July 2022, we have reduced Global Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions by over 41% through clean, renewable energy usage. Our use of solar power at our corporate office and our manufacturing facilities offsets over 1,800 metric tonnes of CO2 per year compared to conventionally sourced electricity – equivalent to planting over 60,000 trees or taking over 400 cars off the road annually.
Our conversion to solar received an honorable mention at the 2022 Utah Best of State Awards and continues to motivate expanded renewable energy initiatives across our global operations. Following the success of our Utah solar project, our teams are evaluating onsite solar installations and alternative clean energy options at other facilities, like wind powering our new warehouse and distribution center in Poland. We recently constructed this facility in Warsaw, which is now powered 100% by wind energy through a long-term agreement with a local farm. We are also assessing the potential for solar energy in Mexico, Shanghai, and elsewhere while identifying alternative renewable solutions where onsite installations may not be feasible. Additionally, we joined the local Utah Clean Air Partnership to promote broader environmental action.
At Nature’s Sunshine, sustainability guides every operational decision we make. Converting our largest manufacturing site to 100% solar reflects our deep-rooted purpose: sharing the healing power of nature with the world. We will continue leading the charge on renewable energy and resource conservation to protect this healing power for generations to come. Our communities, our suppliers, our customers and our planet deserve nothing less.
