Corporate social responsibility is a key tenet of Wolter Kluwer’s philosophy, and the subject of its 2020 publication “Corporate Social Responsibility – Sustainable Business: Environmental, Social and Governance Frameworks for the 21st Century”. Our Annual Law Summit typically includes a CSR activity that helps support the local community and gives the Wolters Kluwer global team an opportunity to connect with peers while giving back. Half of the attendees were from North America, while the other 50% came from EMEA (some of whom were from Poland) and APAC. As our first in person event in three years, we welcomed the face-to-face opportunity to catch up and spend time together helping others. The CSR event kicked off the week of meetings and networking, setting the tone for the upcoming week of teambuilding, giving back to the community, and coming back together.
In October 2022 the Law Summit was held in Madrid, Spain where, due to the war in their home country, many displaced Ukrainian refugee families have relocated. Our goal for a give-back activity was to benefit and support local and displaced families and say thank you to the local community After some discussion, we decided to donate bicycles to refugee children through a bike building team activity. To achieve this, we collaborated with a locally based NGO who is supporting Ukrainian children and their families in the community. Founded in 1949, SOS Children's Villages is an international non-governmental social development organization active in the field of children's rights and committed to children's needs and concerns.
On our behalf, SOS Children’s Villages teamed up with a local destination management company (DMC) to create a program to bring the bike build to life. The program included providing the parts to make the bikes and giving our attendees instructions on the bike construction. Our 100-person group divided into teams of ten people each and were able to construct ten bikes for the Ukrainian children.
Working in teams to assemble the bikes was a very rewarding experience. No-one knew how to build a bike, but we had fun learning and bonding with our peers. It was especially memorable, knowing that the result of the activity in which we were engaged would be very meaningful for the children. Actively participating in a giveback program is a very special heartfelt experience.
Once we finished building the bikes, we decorated them and included cards and balloons as a final touch. The bikes looked very festive and ready for their new riders! The representative of the SOS Children’s Village who came to collect them gave us an overview of the work they were doing in Madrid. He thanked us for our donation and emphasized how much the bikes would help the Ukrainian children.
We were proud of our efforts – we had had a wonderful experience building the bikes and were happy to know that our contribution would make a difference in the lives of displaced children. Our attendees loved the time spent getting to know their colleagues and to work for a company that believes in CSR and in giving employees the opportunity to give back.
