Nomination Title: Virtrial's Patient Management Program

Virtrial’s Patient Management Program is a new breed of virtual trial platform. It provides an option for clinical trials that require a combination of in-clinic and virtual visits. Its combined video, text, and email offer convenience to patients that can speed patient recruitment, increase retention, and generate improved outcomes saving pharmaceutical companies time and money in getting medications to market faster.

Unlike other virtual trial offerings, Virtrial’s Patient Management Program is the only solution that operates on any device, including participants’ personal devices, (Apple, Android, smartphone, tablet, desktop,) eliminating the expense of purchasing standard devices for each patient. Using a BYOD (bring your own device) model allows patients to use a device they are comfortable with and makes it easier for sites to train the patients on the app. Conducting virtual trials with patients’ personal devices also means it is possible to contact them 2 - 5 years later to fully assess safety effects in a real-world setting for longer post-approval trials, as is now being recommended by the FDA.

The Patient Management Program is also unique in that it enables pharmaceutical companies to run hybrid virtual trials using their preferred clinical networks. The platform is available for use at any site, adding flexibility for pharmaceutical companies, patients, and clinical sites.

The Patient Management Program can be programmed to automatically manage patient communication and touchpoints and provides a dashboard reporting platform to view compliance. It offers 4-way video calling and a medically qualified interpreter can be added to any call between patient, parent, physician and coordinator with the click of a button. There are 20 languages available via video and 183 via audio. Additionally, there is a unique option to disconnect video if bandwidth falls below 23% to maintain audio connection.

The Patient Management Program is built on the proven Stratus Video (https://www.stratusvideo.com/) and Synzi telehealth platform (https://synzi.com/) which won the 2018 Medtech breakthrough award for virtual care innovation. The platform has been in use for the past eight years and is in use at over 1700 hospitals, conducting 100,000 virtual visits per day. It is hosted in a secure, cloud-based environment that is HIPAA compliant. Major hospitals and home health care companies trust the platform due to its security, stability and scalability.

By augmenting the existing platform with customized features specifically designed for clinical trial use, the Patient Management Program is intuitive for both patients and clinical research sites. The platform continues to evolve and will soon include the capability for participants to sign consent forms electronically. The solution is also slated for API integration to wearables and other technology applications such as ePRO and edc.

Adding the flexibility of virtual visits simplifies the clinical trial process in multiple ways. Using a virtual platform, patients have a direct route to connect with their study coordinator or principal investigator (PI) via video, email, phone, or text to easily ask study related questions or share adverse experiences at virtual visits and, if needed, between visits. Additionally, enabling patients to complete simple compliance checks virtually, will significantly reduce the number of dropouts and requires no additional sites be added to the study to meet study endpoints.

By enabling patients to use their own devices for virtual trials, allowing any clinical trial site to participate, and helping pharmaceutical companies to significantly improve time to market and streamline data management, Virtrial’s Patient Management Program is truly transforming the clinical trial industry.
