MIRS, or the MEPCOM (Military Entrance Processing Command) Integrated Resource System, is a software system used to track military applicants during their enlistment process. It houses applicants’ aptitude tests, medical exams, background checks, and more.
Being 25+ years old, the legacy system crashed frequently and had a steep learning curve. Over a three-year period, Tandem’s software consultants engaged with MEPCOM team members to lead a complete re-envisioning of MIRS.
Our product design team carefully considered the user flow and page layouts, including familiar acronyms and jargon while taking the opportunity to rethink everything. Our developers rewrote all the code — with over 9 million lines of code written and 11 integrations completed, they brought our designers’ visions to life. MEPCOM employees can now see applicants’ information in one place rather than logging into multiple portals. Since launching MIRS 1.1 in February 2021, over one million applicants are in the system and 100,000+ enlistment contracts have been signed.
Most importantly, the reimagined user experience improved morale and decreased onboarding time for new employees from several months (plus a 200-page manual!) to a matter of days. MIRS 1.1 empowers MEPCOM employees to process military applicants faster than ever before.
