Since 2014, SDCCU has partnered with the San Diego County Office of Education, SDCOE, on our Stuff the Bus campaign to collect school supplies for students experiencing homelessness in
San Diego County. According to SDCOE, more than 20,000 school-age children were identified as homeless during the last school year. Homelessness can mean living in a shelter, sharing a residence with whole families, living in a car or trailer or sharing a room in an apartment with relatives. Homelessness is not limited to urban, downtown San Diego — it also affects suburban school districts all over the county.

This campaign benefits these students in need with supplies going to 34 school districts and 31 charter schools. The purpose of the campaign is to remove barriers to learning and send students in need back to school ready to learn just like their peers.

In 2023, we elevated the program by partnering with The Angels Baseball Foundation in Orange County to collect money to purchase back to school supplies for students in need in Orange and Riverside counties as well.

  6. If you are providing written answers for your submission, you must provide an answer to this third question: Describe the development of the campaign or program: the planning process, the goal setting, the creative and media development, the scheduling, etc. (up to 250 words):

    Total 247 words used.

Annual planning begins with our team at SDCCU meeting with the SDCOE to discuss needs and changes from the previous year and brainstorm potential partnerships and ideas to make the campaign bigger and better than the prior year. Each year, the goal is to fulfill 100% of all requests received by the SDCOE to enable kids to head back to school prepared to learn.

In 2023, we planned to keep the fundraiser online, but wanted a way to reach an even broader audience to raise as much money as possible for students in need. We scheduled a meeting with the leadership of Jersey Mike’s San Diego locations to discuss a potential partnership. They were receptive to the idea, and we worked quickly to create assets to educate their employees about the program and the need to garner their support in generating donations from customers in the stores.

SDCCU’s in-house Marketing team created all campaign assets, including those for our partners at SDCOE and Jersey Mike’s. SDCCU’s media and communications team created social ads, scheduled television interviews and a media day to raise awareness about the campaign. To better help explain why this campaign is so important, SDCCU also interviewed SDCOE staff that deal directly with these students in need.

The campaign launched on June 26, 2023, and ran through July 31, 2023, in order to raise the funds needed to purchase school supplies for students heading back to school in the fall prior to their start dates.

  7. If you are providing written answers for your submission, you must provide an answer to this fourth question: Outline the activities and concrete results of this campaign or program since the beginning of 2022. Even if your initiative started before 2022, limit your response to activities and results since the beginning of 2022 only (up to 250 words):

    Total 57 words used.

In 2023, the school supply drive was held online and donations were collected at any Jersey Mike’s location in San Diego County. The drive enabled SDCOE to fulfill 100% of all requests received!

    • Filled 9,147 backpacks
    • 220,000 school supplies

    In 2022:
