TiDB is an open-source distributed SQL database built for  — and used for — the most demanding modern applications, including Pinterest, Airbnb, Databricks and Flipkart.

With other databases, you have to choose performance or stability. With TiDB, you get both. Its streamlined tech stack supports transactional and analytical workloads with elastic scaling, real-time operational insights and continuous access to data—all in a single database.

Key to TiDB’s performance and stability is its unique decoupled architecture, which separates storage and SQL processing, making horizontal scale-out smooth and seamless.

TiDB features support for ACID transactions, as well as a mixed-workload processing layer for real-time operational insights. TiDB is also wire-compatible with MySQL, making it an appealing alternative to MySQL 8.0 for both legacy and greenfield applications.

TiDB 7.5 provides an array of powerful new features to enhance the reliability of business-critical workloads and speed up workloads with fewer resources. These include:

    • Reducing I/O, compute, and memory of specific background jobs via TiDB’s new global sort feature

    • Stabilizing critical workloads by enabling users to alter the priority level of large background jobs

    • Isolating background tasks to designated nodes and dynamically adding compute nodes to handle ad hoc background tasks

    • Catching and acting on unexpectedly costly queries for even greater stability between and within workloads

    • Maximizing MySQL 8.0 compatibility with enhanced features for easier system migration and granular control over system variables within specific SQL statements.

PingCAP also provides TiDB 7.1 in hosted (TiDB Dedicated) and serverless (TiDB serverless) formats for simplified management and greater cost-efficiency.

TiDB’s advanced features and high degree of automation enable businesses to focus on growth and innovation rather than the complexities of their data infrastructure.

Pinterest tapped PingCAP to address the limitations of its existing HBase system, which was used for user-facing applications. By using TiDB, Pinterest had the opportunity to consolidate its tech stack, enhance development velocity and reduce costs. When carrying out the project, PingCAP evaluated Pinterest’s secondary index services system, IXIA, by implementing the safe functionality provided by IXIA on TiDB. Straight away, PingCAP’s technicians achieved 80% cost reduction, strong consistency and better latency compared to the previous system.

In 2019, ZTO Express chose TiDB to help provide better customer experience, increase efficiency and lower operation cost. In that same year, ZTO completed 12.12 billion orders, an increase of 42.2% YOY. TiDB enabled the introduction of a secondary distribution logistics system, which reduced the delivery fee per package by an average of 25% in Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities. With TiDB, the new information system refined management and increased operational efficiency. In the second quarter of 2020, ZTO’s cost per order dropped by 17.1% year-on-year.
