The company car or truck - they are keys to your organization’s success, because your sales and service people need these vehicles to conduct company business. But they're also a tremendous expense and risk. What are your company vehicle drivers doing behind the wheel? Are they creating excess risk by driving dangerously? Are they as productive as they could be? What’s going on with the engine – is a costly transmission failure in the cards?

In 2005, PHH Arval, one of the world’s leading fleet management companies, launched a new technology solution to the business challenges of driver productivity, risk management, and vehicle performance. PHH Onboard(SM) is a telematics-powered service that goes well beyond traditional in-vehicle products like GPS tracking. PHH’s unique solution combines vehicle data captured by an onboard telematics device with fleet data from PHH’s huge data warehouse and applies PHH’s consulting expertise to take companies to the next level of cost management and productivity enhancement.

The results have been impressive. Introduced in 2005, PHH Onboard is helping companies eliminate speeding over company policy thresholds; reduce fuel costs by 10%; eliminate unauthorized vehicle use; reduce unnecessary idle time by 25%; get near-perfect odometer readings; and lower overall fleet costs.

One client cut collision repair costs in half in vehicles equipped with PHH Onboard; others have been able to identify drivers who consistently and repeatedly speed on the highway – and do something about this risky behavior.  Some clients are using PHH Onboard to manage the productivity of their sales force – understanding where their sales people are, how long they stay at each client visit, how much of the day was used to call on clients.

For service fleets, PHH Onboard identifies drivers who let their vehicles idle unnecessarily in the driveway while they’re in the customer’s house fixing the air conditioning or plumbing. A call to those fuel-wasters can dramatically cut gasoline costs. And PHH Onboard also helps reduce vehicle maintenance costs, as PHH’s vehicle technicians receive engine diagnostic information that signals when something drastic is going to fail – and get it fixed (at lower cost) before the driver is placed at risk.

It’s not just about cost savings, either. During Hurricane Rita, PHH Onboard provided invaluable assistance to one company that needed to evacuate it clients – disabled people, the elderly, and disadvantaged youths – from its facilities near Houston. The vehicles equipped with PHH Onboard made their way through traffic jams to the company’s Dallas facility. Senior managers were able to see exactly where their vans were, identify one vehicle that had fallen behind the pack and find out what was wrong. Everyone arrived safely, and company managers feel that PHH Onboard has been a key factor in the fleet’s improved fleet safety.

PHH Arval has developed a customized return on investment (ROI) model to help potential PHH Onboard users determine the return on investment they can expect from a telematics strategy. The benefits of PHH Onboard can and are being measured and reported.
