MetLife Legal Plans: Empowering American Workers
Our company’s mission is “to make legal services affordable for and accessible to working Americans,” and our online solutions advance that goal. In 2021, we redesigned our website to meet the evolving needs of our group customers and enrolled participants.
We leverage cloud computing technology to create a flexible, scalable web solution that can grow and evolve as needs arise. We continuously update and improve our website through an agile development process based on customer feedback, survey results, and prototype testing. Our 2019 acquisition of willing.com, an online estate planning service, was part of a strategic decision to expand digital access to legal services.
Online Digital Estate Planning
Our Digital Estate Planning (DEP) experience is a significant enhancement to our website. Participants who would traditionally meet with an attorney in person for estate planning can now complete many tasks online. For example, on the website, participants can complete wills, healthcare directives, powers of attorney, and revocable living trusts.
The self-guided process is designed to be intuitive for everyone to use. Most members can complete their legal documents in less than 15 minutes. In 2021, online DEP reached 75,000 participants who otherwise may not have created a will or estate plan. Note: A Digital Estate Planning video is included with our submission.
Online Video Notary
In 2021, we added a real-time video notary service to our website. Participants can meet virtually with a notary and two witnesses to notarize and electronically sign documents. Our online documentation is safe, secure, and meets encryption standards. Video notary is an enhancement that none of our competitors offer.
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Filters
In 2022, we enhanced our Attorney Search feature to enable participants to filter attorneys by demographics such as gender, race, and years of experience. Participants can select attorneys who meet their needs and their personal preferences.
Legal Needs Calculator and Resource Library
With our online calculator, participants can appreciate the cost-effectiveness of the annual premium for Legal Plan coverage, compared to paying for an attorney out-of-pocket. Our members’ website also features an online resource library that houses articles and resources (self-help documents) on various legal topics. The self-service library helps participants plan for a healthy financial future. We welcome judges to log-in and explore the member participant portal (safe and zero solicitation).
Empowering Access and Participant Feedback
We also launched a “Healthcare Heroes” program to give back to essential workers in hospitals and healthcare settings. We provided free Digital Estate Planning access to healthcare workers across the country. This free legal service offered peace of mind during unprecedented times—further empowering American workers.
