Nomination Title: Barry Salzberg, CEO

1. Tell the story about what this nominee achieved since January 1 2009 (up to 500 words). Focus on specific accomplishments, and relate these accomplishments to past performance or industry norms. Be sure to mention obstacles overcome, innovations or discoveries made, and outcomes:

After several years of unprecedented growth, 2009 was a challenging period for
the Deloitte U.S. firms. But due in part to Barry Salzberg’s steady leadership,
Deloitte expects to meet its operating goals for fiscal 2010 (June 2009-May 2010).

Deloitte entered 2009 facing challenges in many of the industries it serves.
Salzberg’s insistence on rigorous scenario planning meant the organization had
prepared for a number of outcomes, from a mild downturn to a more severe global
recession. As a result, the organization was able to quickly make adjustments to
stay on track even as conditions in the U.S. economy deteriorated.

Having learned the lessons of previous recessions, Salzberg kept his leaders
focused on the organization’s long-term health, adjusting headcount but making
sure it did not fall too far or too fast and investing in growth areas like the
health care, energy and environmental sustainability.

He also took advantage of the economic conditions to make a bold acquisition of
a competitor at an advantageous cost. He led a transaction to purchase
substantially all of the assets of BearingPoint, Inc’s North American Public
Services practice, which significantly grew Deloitte’s market share in the
Federal Government sector. This transaction was even recognized by The M&A
Advisor as the Middle-Market Deal of the Year.
At the same time, he increased the value obtained from the investment he had
long championed in Deloitte University, a center designed to serve as a catalyst
for career-long learning and leadership development. The groundbreaking for the
facility occurred in late 2009, and Deloitte University is on track to open in 2011.

In such a difficult economic environment, it would have been easy to scale back
Deloitte’s commitment to the community. Instead Salzberg, an active champion of
Deloitte’s industry-leading community involvement program, unveiled a remarkable
commitment in 2009: Deloitte pledged to perform $50 million of pro bono work
over the next three years. The vast majority will be carried out in the field of
education, a personal passion for Salzberg, who has served on the board of a
leading education nonprofit, College Summit, for four years and became its Chair
in 2009.

As the leader of the largest private professional services partnership in the
world, Salzberg remains accountable to some 3,000 equity-holding partners and
1,000 directors as well as nearly 40,000 employees. Always a firm believer in
the importance of transparent communication, he ramped up his efforts during
2009, holding “Straight Talk” town hall meetings across the U.S. and in India
where he provided employees frank answers to challenging questions.

During 2009, Deloitte landed on the cover of BusinessWeek as “The Best Place to
Start a Career.” The organization was also ranked above the majority of its
competitors in Fortune’s annual “100 Best Companies to Work For” survey, and was
ranked 25th on the DiversityInc Top 50. Deloitte also received the Catalyst
award in recognition of its initiatives for the advancement of women in
business, becoming the only professional services firm to win this prestigious
award twice.
