40 years old, but until 2014, we didn’t understand that happy employees will create happy customers. That’s when our journey towards transformation began.

Since then, our approach has always been “take care of people, and people will take care of you.” We strive to maintain a culture of positivity, discipline, and a little silliness. Our core values are “Do Right, Look Sharp, Be Great” and the ultimate mission of the company is to improve lives: Customers, Co-Workers, and Community (one dad-joke at a time). 

In late 2022, CM Heating was purchased by a parent company. As the rumor goes, it’s difficult to preserve the heartbeat of a company once you have a distant nationwide company remotely controlling it. Well, we’re proud to demonstrate proof that the heartbeat has not been lost.

What’s the cost of success? Most successful companies felt forced, at some point, to choose only 2 of the following 3 traits: Profitability, Happy customers, or Happy employees. It’s extremely difficult to achieve all three. Through a deeply empowering and trust-forward model of leadership, CM’s management team coaches employees towards outstanding production standards while still cultivating care, fun, and flexibility. This can be validated as they have a 4.9 Star Average in the reviews received, have the highest number of projects meeting efficiency minimums with local utility companies, and the employees have given them dozens of 5 star ratings on anonymous platforms such as Glassdoor. Last year, CM Heating even had a customer apply to work at CM Heating (and was hired)! Lastly, a woman named Julie works at the convenience store right by CM’s shop so she interacts with a lot of CM employees when they’re off the clock (and not ‘turning on the professionalism’). When she needed a new furnace in December, guess who she bought from! CM Heating. Why would she do that if they were constantly rude to her or looking disgruntled, etc. The consultant said that, when Julie answered the door, they both unexpectedly recognized each other by name and had a big, happy greeting.

In an industry where it’s proven that most HVAC companies are cutting corners and cheating customers, how do you disrupt the pattern? Residential HVAC saw a 25% decline in demand in the greater Seattle area last year which caused many companies to struggle to break even, including CM, and heightened the temptation to cut corners. By having each department head work with their team to identify areas of waste and potential optimization, CM Heating was able to decrease install errors by 64%, and bring in 30% less revenue in 2023 than 2022 but still turn the same profit as 2022, plus preserve the heartbeat of the culture at CM Heating. Because CM practices empowerment, there is often full disclosure of difficulties the company is facing. After hearing that the company is struggling to break even and could be forced to have a staff-reduction, all of the staff (senior, junior, etc) volunteered to take extra days off unpaid for a few months in order to make a staff reduction less necessary.
