Invisalign® Virtual Care, built on years of technology R&D at Align was launched in May 2020 to help doctors connect with existing Invisalign patients to ensure continuity of care. As we received positive feedback from doctors and their patients, we introduced Invisalign Virtual Care AI in September 2022.
Invisalign Virtual Care AI, Align’s next generation remote monitoring solution with new artificial intelligence-assisted capabilities that streamline workflows for doctors and their staff building on the Invisalign Virtual Care platform launched previously, by adding new artificial intelligence-assisted capabilities that streamline workflows for doctors and their staff.
This next generation tool includes features such as patient enrollment, setup, and review directly on the Invisalign Doctor Site without the need to use separate standalone solutions. Invisalign Virtual Care AI helps doctors remotely monitor Invisalign treatment progress based on their own pre-approved clinical settings and AI-assisted algorithms for Automatic Assessment calibrated to each doctor’s ClinCheck® treatment features. AI-assisted Automated Notifications, based on doctor settings, guide patients to either advance to the next aligner stage if their treatment is tracking well or to stay on their current stage for longer or to contact their doctor if their treatment is not tracking.
In addition to the AI assisted technology in photo assessment and feedback notifications, we also utilize the same technology in the Advance Camera Module in the My Invisalign App to improve the overall photo-taking experience for patients by offering better room light detection, posterior teeth, and open bite detection. These enhancements have resulted in higher quality images for doctors to review their patients’ Invisalign treatment progress more effectively.
The workflow begins with the AI-guided photo capture in the My Invisalign App where patients who are enrolled in Virtual Care AI are able to automatically capture high quality clinically relevant photos (posterior and open bites) with and without cheek retractors and Invisalign Lens and send these photos to their doctor. After the doctors receive the photos on their Invisalign Doctor Site, the trained technician will review the treatment photos using the AI-guided Automatic Assessment tool that is set by the doctor’s clinical settings to objectively measure each patient’s aligner spaces for each tooth by estimating the pixel size of spaces between aligner and incisal/occlusal edge. The improved accuracy in assessments allow doctors to quickly focus on the problem areas for each patient where their teeth do not correctly fit into the aligner. Within an hour of submitting the photos, patients will receive AI-guided Automated Notification in the My Invisalign App about their treatment tracking.
From the launch of these AI-assisted capabilities in Virtual Care, we have seen improvements on:
- Number of cases submitted with 99% photo acceptance:
- only 1% of photos were rejected due to teeth not being in the highlighted areas for review.
- Time spent to review photos:
- 50 mins mean to review photos
- Numbers of photos with unclear posterior teeth visibility
- 35% reduction
