A patient is rushed to an emergency room at 3 a.m. with sudden paralysis and
loss of consciousness. The attending physician suspects a stroke and orders a
stat CT scan of the brain. Time is critical because a stroke can be treated
successfully within a very narrow window of time. Untreated, a stroke is very
likely to cause severe permanent deficits or even death. What if the hospital
doesn’t have a radiologist on site or a radiologist on call who specializes in
neuroradiology? Fortunately, the patient is in good hands. The hospital
contracts with Virtual Radiologic (vRad), a national radiology practice and
leader in the development of next-generation technology for radiology.

Halfway across the country, a vRad radiologist who specializes in
neuroradiology receives an urgent order to read the patient’s brain CT study.
No blood leakage is detected which means the patient can be treated with
intravenous clot-busting medication. The hospital’s emergency medicine
physician receives an alert on her iPhone®, signaling that the radiology
report is in. The physician quickly reviews the report and key reference
images provided by the radiologist, also right on her phone. With the right
diagnosis, the medication can be administered to the patient to minimize the
impact. In this case and thousands like it every day, the patient’s survival
depends on accurate, fast results without a minute to spare.

The tool that enabled this life-saving transaction of critical information is
vRad® ResultsSM.

This cloud communication tool, hosted and managed via the Internet, was
introduced on July 1, 2010, for radiology practices and hospitals. vRad
Results provides secure access to key reference images and radiology reports
for the entire patient care team via Apple® iPhone® or iPad™ mobile digital
devices and the Internet. Should the ordering physician want to talk to the
local or vRad radiologist, a single tap on the iPhone or click of a mouse
initiates a consultation call.

vRad Results is more essential than ever, particularly in emergency rooms?the
medical environment in which immediacy is most critical. Radiologic imaging is
often required for accurate diagnosis and commencement of treatment and is
ordered for more than 40 percent of emergency department visits.  Physicians
report that accessing information when and where it is needed is one of
their “top challenges.”  The demands in healthcare today, in which every step
and every outcome are measured, do not allow for delays in transmission of
this critical information.

Another important feature of vRad Results is time stamping of all
communications. This helps to support an organization’s efforts to attain The
Joint Commission’s National Patient Safety Goals and other quality initiatives.

With the introduction of vRad Results and other tools, vRad continues to
advance its technology offerings with almost a decade’s worth of direct input
from the practice’s 180+ radiologists and a customer base of more than 1,200
medical facilities. These technology tools, combined with the support of
vRad’s 24/7/365 Operations Center, help radiologists and hospitals achieve
consistent quality and service standards.
