Menzelet and Kılavuzlu Hydroelectric Power Plants stand as transformative landmarks in Turkey's energy sector evolution. From their inception, Menzelet Dam and HPP, inaugurated between 1980 and 1992, served as dual-purpose marvels, meeting electricity needs while facilitating irrigation by harnessing the Ceyhan River's flow. Boasting an impressive 124 MW installed capacity, with four turbines generating 31 MW each, Menzelet has been pivotal in not just powering regions but also managing flood control effectively.

Similarly, the subsequent development of Kilavuzlu Dam and HPP, spanning from 1996 to 2011, further tapped into the Ceyhan River's potential. Located downstream from Menzelet, Kilavuzlu, with its 54 MW capacity spread across four turbines, each yielding 13.5 MW, bolstered energy production and irrigation endeavors.

Entek's strategic acquisition of both plants in 2018 marked a transformative shift towards heightened efficiency and environmental sustainability. Under Entek's leadership, a relentless pursuit of operational excellence has significantly reduced downtime and optimized output, thereby reinforcing regional energy security. Notably, capacity expansion initiatives have ensured these facilities are poised to meet burgeoning energy demands effectively.

Environmental stewardship has emerged as a cornerstone of this journey, with Entek aligning operations with international standards for biodiversity conservation, sustainable resource management, and ecological preservation.

  4. Outline the nominated achievement since July 1 2021 that you wish to bring to the judges' attention (up to 250 words):

    Total 234 words used.

Introduction of Primary Frequency Control (PFC) Service: Menzelet Power Plant implemented PFC service during its rehabilitation, enhancing power quality delivered to TEİAŞ. PFC ensures a unity power factor, reducing energy losses during transmission and boosting overall electrical efficiency, reliability, and stability. This initiative yields an average annual benefit of $600,000, driven by reduced energy losses and improved power quality, resulting in significant cost savings for both the plant and TEİAŞ.

Implementation of Guided Eco Turbine Technology: The adoption of guided eco turbine technology at Menzelet enhances turbine performance, ensuring operation above standard efficiency levels. This innovation maximizes energy output while minimizing operational costs. Menzelet Power Plant realizes an annual benefit of approximately $500,000 due to increased energy production, resulting in higher revenue generation and substantial cost savings.

Comprehensive Turbine Rehabilitation: Both Menzelet and Kilavuzlu Power Plants undergo comprehensive turbine rehabilitation, refurbishing and optimizing turbines for peak performance and efficiency. This initiative leads to a combined annual benefit of approximately $900,000, derived from increased energy production and reduced operational costs across both plants.

Impact (all data given in TUPRAS’ inverstor presentation as a proof):

Electricity production increased more than 2,000 MWh in 2023

EBITDA was 365M TL in 2021 and increased to 1,365MTL in 2022 and 2,2MTL in 2023

Annual benefit totaling approximately $2 million across both plants.

Total Sales from Production 969 GWh to 1600 GWh in 2023

  5. Explain why the achievement you have highlighted is unique or significant. If possible compare the achievement to the performance of other players in your industry and/or to the nominee's past performance (up to 250 words):

    Total 250 words used.

Annual benefits of approximately $2 million across both plants signify a substantial economic leap, crucial for ensuring the financial sustainability of the power plants. This increased revenue stream empowers them to cover operational costs, invest in maintenance and upgrades, and potentially embark on future expansion projects. Furthermore, the injection of additional revenue into the local economy stimulates growth and development in the surrounding region.

The remarkable increase in electricity production by more than 2,000 MWh in 2023 demonstrates the tangible growth achieved by the power plants. This surge in output not only boosts revenue but also strengthens their position in the energy market.

The substantial growth in EBITDA from 365M TL in 2021 to 2.2MTL in 2023 underscores the financial prosperity attained through operational enhancements and efficiency improvements. This significant increase reflects the plants' ability to capitalize on their enhanced capabilities and generate substantial returns on investment.

Total sales from production skyrocketed from 969 GWh to 1600 GWh in 2023, showcasing the exponential growth trajectory of the power plants. This surge in sales underscores their expanding market presence and increased competitiveness in the energy sector.

The remarkable growth achievements underscore the power plants' leadership in the hydroelectric power sector. By successfully implementing efficiency enhancement initiatives and realizing significant economic benefits, they set a benchmark for excellence in the industry. Their success not only inspires other power plants to adopt similar strategies but also contributes to the overall advancement of the energy sector, solidifying their position as industry leaders.
