Background

Dentsply Sirona is the world’s largest manufacturer of professional dental products and technologies, with over a century of innovation and service to the dental industry and patients worldwide. In 2016, Dentsply Sirona emerged from the two companies, DENTSPLY and Sirona, and, since then, has undergone a significant period of change for its ~15,000 employees as the two companies came together. Dentsply Sirona has its biggest site in Bensheim, Germany. Sirona was part of Siemens until 1997.

Over the past one and a half years, the new CEO, Don Casey, has introduced a new Operating Model and launched a company-wide transformation. This overarching effort called Project Växa, the Swedish word for growth, encompasses the redesign and simplification of the entire value chain, including its structure and processes. In addition, a clearly defined culture – bolstered by a shared purpose – has been fortified across the company.

DS24hours concept

To strengthen employee engagement and a one-team mindset across a culturally diverse and geographically dispersed enterprise and increase understanding of the company’s purpose and operating principles, Dentsply Sirona planned a communication activity like no other – an iconic action of the top management team.

Over a 24-hour span (November 20 through 21, 2019), CEO Don Casey, together with his management team, hosted an all-company event that focused on promoting the company’s culture and purpose. In 24, one-hour timeslots, executive leaders addressed employees in more than 90 global locations via live video stream. In each of the sessions tailored specifically for each region, employees also had the opportunity to speak directly to senior leadership and ask location-specific questions.

In order to host “local” town halls in the native language of each participating site consecutively, the sessions were broadcast via video livestream and with simultaneous translation – in 10 languages. Thus, we bundled over 90 of the largest locations into 24 slots according to languages and time zones with one hour allotted for each town hall. This is how the name of DS24hours came about. We selected the venue and date according to the calendars of the management team, considering the best way to reach as many employees as possible in person and considering various time zones. Thus, we selected our largest manufacturing site, Bensheim (Germany), for a kick-off in-person town hall and as the host location for DS24hours. A TV studio was set up in one of the production halls in Bensheim for streaming the other sessions.

The one hour for each session was split up in 15 to 20 minutes for the Management Team talking about Mission, Purpose, Vision and Operating Principles and their implications for daily work followed by addressing specific needs and issues for each region/location raised through the company-wide engagement survey and pre-submitted questions. The remaining 40 to 45 minutes addressed questions from employees – either those submitted in advance or those asked in the sessions. To increase engagement even more, we asked employees to upload pictures demonstrating our purpose.

We decided that each session would be live with the respective locations, offering the opportunity to engage in an active dialogue. But we also wanted others to participate. Thus, there was a livestream via which everyone could watch all sessions on a website although without the opportunity to ask questions. This livestream was non-stop, thus seeing the studio also during the breaks when the hosts used the space for eating, stretching exercises, and preparing for upcoming sessions.

We exceeded our objectives in reaching employees. In total, close to 66% actively took part in the live sessions at the sites (local town halls) and over 13,000 employees (almost 90%) were engaged: 6,000 unique visitors followed DS24hours via the DS24hours livestream website; 9,800 in total (all clicks). Additionally, information about the event reached more than 58,000 people on social media platforms, such as Facebook or LinkedIn.
