In film and television production, music solidifies the emotional connection between content and viewer as it makes a scene scarier, funnier, more romantic… Yet clearing music for a production is a “fiendish mass of complexities” as explained in this white paper.
Our founder, Jennifer Freed, a post-production accounting executive who, through her first company Trevanna Post, has worked on over 700 productions where she has seen music choices, rightsholder-data, and documents organized in 700 different ways – all of which are archaic, often leading to faulty math and missed deadlines!
Although she had no background in technology or product development, she knew the greatest legacy she could leave was a smart, intuitive, cloud-based system to make this side of the business efficient, accurate, and modern.
And with that version one of Trevanna Tracks was born, which was [REDACTED FOR PUBLICATION] adopted by Netflix in 2018.
Trevanna Tracks is run by a female CEO, Managing Director and Head of Product leading to a perfect trifecta of women in film, music and technology. It has been adopted beyond film production into video games, advertising, and marketing. And these women have led the company to achieve the highest cyber security standards, completing its SOC2 certification.

Conceived as a tool for production companies to streamline the clearance and delivery of music rights on a film-by-film basis, development focused on features to manage the data entry and workflow of each project, and our clients were priced per project.
In late 2021 it evolved into an enterprise solution as media companies working in high volume environments across films, series, and marketing needed a tool where freelancers and employees in business affairs, finance, music creative, and production could collaborate, run and analyze reports on global music activity, use data to inform future creative decisions, get notified at scale of expiring media rights, and maintain research.
As studios began discovering our capabilities, we shifted development and pricing.
We implemented Divisions so enterprises could silo and customize subsidiaries or brands while enabling permission based searches across the organization; we created an Overview which aggregates all projects with a multitude of filters allowing for individuals to look across certain criteria (for example, an executive may need to see all outstanding contracts with Sony Music Group or to quickly view the status of all shows launching in the fall season); and a Song Database, which aggregates all the uses, fees, and negotiation trails of each song across an entire company while allowing for smoother re-use in future productions, will deploy in October.
Rather than falling into the per-user trap, we designed a bespoke pricing model based on the comprehensive number of licenses an organization clears and stores in our system.

Known as a category designer, Trevanna Tracks is the first SaaS solution of its kind, creating the concept and executing the vision for a tool where media companies and production houses can manage the complexities of sync clearance and licensing.
Where every department that touches a film has innovated with sophisticated technologies, music licensing - in an organization without us - is still managed through archaic systems that are prone to inaccuracy and time-consuming duplicate work. To stop this cycle, we’ve launched a training program for up-and-coming music supervisors and licensing professionals so that as they enter the work force, they will expect Trevanna Tracks to be part of the toolkit.
Our first clients were technology companies that wanted to (and have succeeded) become media companies [REDACTED FOR PUBLICATION] – the types of organizations that cannot rely on the way things have always been done because they do not have the time or desire to be inefficient. These companies now include Trevanna Tracks as a requirement on any relevant job description.

Background:
Every song used in a production has an average of four licenses, each requiring clear and specific terms that are individually negotiated based on context, usage, duration, ownership splits, and media rights. And the proof of these negotiation trails must be delivered to the production company and studio.
The pursuit of the perfect track demands research, fierce negotiation, detailed paperwork (that makes up 70% of the job) which is transferred to the licensing teams who then need to make sure finance pays each fee. And then when direction changes in the final mix, you have to go through the process all over again! These professionals shuffle between emails, outdated spreadsheets, and randomly labeled PDFs scattered among systems that don’t interact, are insecure, and unsearchable.
Adding to the challenge is the increasing volume of syncs needed. Since our founding, the sync industry has exploded (think Running Up that Hill in Stranger Things!) and with that, licensors have focused attention on making sure productions remain complaint, taking legal action when they don’t. Trevanna Tracks is indispensable in these circumstances!
