Nomination Title: Nancy McFarlane, President

Describe for the judges the activities and accomplishments of the nominated entrepreneur during the eligibility period (up to 500 words):

Nancy is the president of MedPro Rx, an accredited specialty infusion pharmacy based in Raleigh, N.C., that provides infusion medications and services to clients with chronic illnesses. Focusing on diseases such as hemophilia, von Willebrand disease, autoimmune neuromuscular, immunology, and rheumatology based disorders, MedPro Rx sets the standard for infusion care with its high touch, client focused service model. The pharmacy finished Number 2 in the 2011 Top 300 Small Businesses of the South competition, was the Triangle's Number 1 Small Business in 2009 and 2011, and was named to the Inc. 5000, a list of the nation’s 5,000 fastest-growing businesses based on revenue growth, in 2009 and 2010.

MedPro Rx received several honors over the last year, including Triangle Business Journal’s 2010 Best Places To Work award in the small businesses category, a third consecutive year on TBJ’s Fast 50 ranking of the fastest-growing privately held companies in the Triangle, and the Patriotic Award from the National Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, an organization of the Department of Defense. The latter recognizes employers for contributing to national security and protecting liberty and freedom by supporting employee participation in America’s National Guard and Reserve. Since 2009, MedPro has awarded 93 “Education is Power” scholarships worth over $150,000 to recipients with bleeding disorders. It sponsored events such as the Virginia Hemophilia Foundation’s “Family Overnight” at the Virginia Living Museum. Children and their parents took part in an educational program on bleeding disorders, an exhibit tour and planetarium show.

Nancy served on the 2010 Women on Board steering committee in support of the NC Center for Women in Public Service (NCCWPS). The NCCWPS is a nonpartisan organization that prepares women for elected and appointed offices statewide. Nancy was an ambassador for the NCCWPS second annual Women On Board event on Nov. 30, 2010 in Raleigh that brought together business and civic leaders to celebrate, recognize and encourage women’s participation on boards and commissions in NC. She and her husband, Ron, who is COO of MedPro Rx, received the Distinguished Pharmacy Alumni Award from Virginia Commonwealth University for their contributions to the profession of pharmacy. Nancy also serves on the UNC Pharmacy Foundation Board.

Her biggest announcement outside of her profession was her decision to run for mayor of Raleigh in 2011 following four years representing District A on City Council. Nancy’s service there grew from her role as president of the Greystone Homeowners Association from 2003 to 2007, where she organized friends and neighbors to combat storm water runoff and protect the Crabtree watershed from runoff contamination related to several development projects. As chair of the Council’s Comprehensive Planning Committee and a member of the Budget and Economic Development Committee, she campaigns for good growth planning, and responsible development that protects Raleigh's quality of life and the environment. She emphasizes these issues as part of her platform as an independent candidate for mayor.
