  1. Briefly describe the nominated organization: history and past performance (up to 200 words):

    Total 155 words used.

As the leader in the global aromatherapy and essential oils market, doTERRA has set out with the bold commitment to source 100% pure essential oils from around the world. Since day one, doTERRA—a name inspired by the Latin phrase for “gift of the earth”—has pursued a legacy of positive impact. To date, we have seen great success in championing people and the environment over profit.

One of the ways that we are tracking impact is through our sourcing. Early on in doTERRA’s history, we realized that in order to bring pure, ethically produced essential oils to the market, we would first need to ensure two things: that our sourcing partners were taken care of and that the environment was cared for. This led to the creation of Co-Impact Sourcing—a model that creates shared value for all stakeholders in the supply chain by being at the source and intentionally implementing environmental stewardship and/or social impact initiatives.

  2. Outline the organization's achievements since the beginning of last year that you wish to bring to the judges' attention (up to 250 words):

    • Decreased air freight volume by 19% and increased ocean freight volume by 130%, reducing carbon emissions

    • Overhauled shipping materials to increase the use of recycled materials and remove single-use plastics

      • New carton design decreased corrugate by 60% (saving 26 million sq ft)

      • Used 2.6 million pounds of recycled paper void fill per year, saving 283,000 lbs of plastic void per year

      • Saved 336,682 lbs of paper by not using packing slips

    • Achievements in our sourcing areas include:

      • Hawaii - Planting 344,726 trees at Kealakekua Mountain Reserve–the largest reforestation effort in the history of the State of Hawaii

      • Pennsylvania - Repurposed 174,180 kgs (about 384,000 lbs) of Birch bark per month that would have otherwise been wasted

      • Haiti - doTERRA works with local cooperatives to ensure that proper planting and harvesting practices are followed to ensure long-term viability of the local topsoil.

      • New Zealand - Douglas Fir trees are an invasive species in New Zealand and have become a problem for native plants. doTERRA works with locals to sustainably control invasion by collecting and processing needles of Douglas Fir saplings for the extraction of essential oil.

      • Ethiopia, Oman, and Somaliland - doTERRA worked with sourcing partners to develop a harvesting best practices manual to support the sustainability of Frankincense trees and provide financial opportunity to the local community.

doTERRA translates as “gift of the earth” from Latin, and since day one, we have taken care to act as stewards–protecting the earth’s precious resources. If we cannot source an essential oil sustainably, we simply do not source it at all. We know that our commitment to sustainable sourcing and environmental stewardship are two primary reasons our customers both love and trust us. While this ethos has been a part of doTERRA from the beginning, we also know that we can’t improve what we don’t measure. So in 2020, the doTERRA Sourcing Team set out to conduct an extensive evaluation of all our essential oil supply chains so we can ensure we are sourcing the best and helping the most. We developed the evaluation scorecard to measure the impact of our sourcing practices across supply chains. The scorecard includes dozens of indicators to measure each supply chain against a consistent standard of ethical and sustainable sourcing practices. The Co-Impact Sourcing evaluation program is unique because doTERRA isn’t interested in just assigning a label to our supply chain partners. We’re actively invested in helping them improve their supply chains when it comes to ethics and sustainability. In 2022, doTERRA awarded $100,000 to improve 29 essential oil supply chains as part of the Co-Impact Sourcing Challenge Fund–a collaborative program designed to help partners improve their supply chain evaluation scores. After all, when everyone in the supply chain succeeds, we all win.
