Nomination Title: Betty Tuppeny, CEO/Founder of Domus, Inc.

Tell the story about what the nominated entrepreneur achieved during the eligibility period (up to 500 words). Focus on specific accomplishments, and relate these accomplishments to past performance or industry norms. Be sure to mention obstacles overcome, innovations or discoveries made, and outcomes:

Betty Tuppeny founded Domus in 1993, and since that time it has emerged as one of the top ten advertising and public relations agencies in the Philadelphia market.  The agency’s singular business model offers clients specialized solutions that drive business growth and increase ROI.  Combining in-house strategic planning and account management with an international network of top independent creative, research and media talent, Domus creates customized teams built for each client’s specific need.  The agency’s current clients include well-known national brands such as Lutron Electronics Co., Inc., Novo Nordisk Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Aramark School Support Services, Con Agra Foods, Tyco Healthcare, Wawa, Inc., Atofina Chemicals and Foamex.

How does Domus do it?  Through a method called Disciplined Disruption™, the practice of combining disciplined business thinking and fearless creativity.  Blending the perfect marriage of strategy and creativity, Domus utilized Disciplined Disruption earlier this year to win the public relations business of Oki Data Americas, Inc., the fastest-growing color page printer manufacturer in the United States.  Besting powerhouse agencies such as incumbent Publicis Group, S.A., Golin/Harris, Euro RSCG and Neale-May, Domus orchestrated the North American launch of seven next-generation OKI printers and the introduction of a full suite of support services, unveiled to the press, key prospects and customers at an exclusive event at the Plaza Hotel in New York.  The end result included 23 members of the press in attendance, surpassing the goal of 15. That media turnout resulted in 16 articles and news mentions of the event – just in the first week post-event.

An integral part of the Domus success story is its CEO, Betty Tuppeny.  Throughout the past decade, the agency’s billings have grown an astronomical 2,000 percent; 37 percent in 2003 alone- despite what experts called one of the advertising industry’s worst-ever economic years.  Last year, Tuppeny was named by the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development as one of the State’s Best 50 Women in Business and was also selected by the Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce as the 2003 Business Person of the Year.  Domus’ unique success story also made it to the finals in Fast Company magazine’s international “Fast 50” award competition in 2003.

Betty Tuppeny serves on the boards of directors for the Police Athletic League and the Philadelphia Industrial Development Corporation (PIDC) which is dedicated to
forwarding Philadelphia’s economic interests.   Recently, Domus was chosen to serve as the marketing communications agency for the Pennsylvania Women’s Commission on a pro bono basis.  In light of its success, the Philadelphia Business Journal selected the agency as one of the Top 25 Women-Owned Businesses in the city, and named Tuppeny one of the Top 25 Women to Watch.

In an industry whose leadership has traditionally been dominated by men, Domus is currently one of the largest agencies of its kind in the Philadelphia market, with almost exclusive female leadership.  Led by Betty Tuppeny, Domus continues to achieve new heights.
