    Katie Dunphy is a Partner and National ESG Reporting Transformation Leader at KPMG in Canada, one of the leading professional services firms in Canada and globally. Katie has over 25 years of experience in sustainability, focusing on climate change, human rights, and sustainable investing. She is a trusted advisor to institutional investors, corporations, governments, and non-governmental organizations on how to integrate sustainability considerations into their strategies, operations, reporting and decision-making. She is also a leader in building the next generation of sustainability professionals, having trained and mentored professionals throughout her career. Katie Dunphy is a proven leader in helping businesses solve large, complex global challenges, including a spectrum of environmental, social, and governance issues. She has demonstrated innovative leadership in her field by guiding companies on their sustainability journey. She has been a catalyst for change and collaboration among the investor community, as well as across industries and sectors.

    Katie is actively involved in advancing sustainability disclosure standards in Canada through her participation in two key reporting standards oversight bodies:

    • She is a member of the Implementation Committee of the Canadian Sustainability Standards Board (CSSB), (2022 - current) which was established to develop and maintain sustainability-related reporting and assurance standards for Canadian public interest entities. The CSSB aims to enhance the quality, comparability and reliability of sustainability information for investors and other stakeholders, and to align with global frameworks and initiatives. In her role on the Implementation Committee, Katie provides input and feedback on the CSSB's strategy, priorities, governance and stakeholder engagement, and technical advice on specific standards and guidance.
    • In 2024, she became a member of the Reporting & Assurance Standards Oversight Council (RASOC), which oversees the activities of the Accounting Standards Board (AcSB), the Auditing and Assurance Standards Board (AASB) and the CSSB. Katie contributes to the oversight of the three boards' strategies, due processes, performance and stakeholder relationships, and the coordination and alignment of their work.

    In addition to the sustainability and climate change advisory services for clients, these engagements play a significant role to enrich the sustainability ambitions for KPMG.

    She has contributed to the development and enhancement of the firm’s methodologies, tools and solutions, and the firm’s own sustainability commitments and performance. She has been a champion of KPMG’s global net-zero goal by 2030 and has supported the launch of the firm’s environmental travel policy in 2022.

    Katie's deep knowledge of sustainability and active involvement with the CSSB and RASOC demonstrates her leadership and commitment to enhancing sustainability reporting and assurance in Canada--contributing to the global efforts to address the environmental, social, and governance challenges facing the world today. 

    She has also supported corporations in developing and implementing sustainability strategies, policies, frameworks and reporting, as well as conducting ESG due diligence, risk assessments and assurance. She has helped clients navigate their response to complex and emerging sustainability themes, such as respect for human rights, indigenous reconciliation, the circular economy, and social impact. The total value of her work enables companies of all sizes make tangible progress towards a just and sustainable economy.

    • Katie has helped to lead KPMG in Canada’s market research on sustainability reporting through KPMG’s Global Survey of Sustainability Reporting since 2009 and was the lead author of the Canadian Addendum report which focused on the disclosure practices of Canadian reporters regarding biodiversity and natural capital, indigenous reconciliation, and respect for human rights.
    • Katie was a leading member of the KPMG in Canada’s advisory team to the Climate Change workstream of the Investor Leadership Network, a global investor coalition launched at the 2018 G7 meetings to facilitate and accelerate collaboration by leading global investors on key issues related to sustainability and long-term growth. The coalition is composed of 13 global institutional investors representative of six countries, with over US $10 trillion in assets under management. The work culminated in the research and writing of two ground-breaking thought-leadership publications. The first was a Climate Change Physical Risk Toolkit, which provides practical guidance and resources for investors to assess and manage the physical impacts of climate change on their portfolios. The toolkit has been widely disseminated and used by the investor community, regulators, standard-setters, and academics. The second publication, a Net Zero Investor Playbook, helps investors navigate the challenge of transition financing and decarbonization commitments, and seize the opportunities presented by the transition to net zero.
