Global Press creates a more informed and inclusive world by training and employing local women journalists to report the news in some of the world’s least-covered places. By training local women to become world-class journalists, we reframe global narratives, revitalize communities and repair the lack of gender and racial diversity in newsrooms.

Global Press has trained more than 250 reporters globally. Today, it operates independent news bureaus in 37 communities and produces award-winning journalism. Key to its success is that leadership and all of the reporters it recruits, trains and employs are women. All of its journalists are local to the communities they cover.

Global Press demonstrates that exceptional employment leads to exceptional journalism. The women-led organization is based on the principles of collaborative leadership. Here, staff is provided with strong wages, health benefits, family leave, vacation, professional development, full tech kits, and access to the Global Press Duty of Care program, which incorporates in-person training, risk mitigation and crisis response and helps them stay physically, emotionally, legally and digitally safe.

By redefining international journalism, the women of Global Press enables people everywhere to live freer, fuller lives.

  4. Outline the organization's achievements since July 1 2020 that you wish to bring to the judges' attention (up to 250 words):

    Total 241 words used.

Since July 1, 2020, Global Press has:

    • Produced exceptional journalism, including on women’s rights in the pandemic that won its reporters a 2022 One World Media award.

    • Contributed to mercury being banned in gold mining in Zimbabwe and spurred Mongolian officials to action with its report on forced virginity tests on schoolgirls.

    • Established relationships with new partners, including PBS NewsHour, the BBC, Voice of America, and more.

    • Redesigned Global Press’ website to better present goals, impact and mission and make it a true resource for journalists, donors and supporters. (The redesign won several awards!)

    • Elevated its Duty of Care protocols, including implementing contact-tracing and COVID protocols in every news bureau and issuing a reporter guide that helps them stay safe.

    • Added seven counselors (new total: 18) to the Global Press Wellness Network. In 2020, the Duty of Care program was honored with the APA’s Chester M. Pierce Human Rights Prize and in 2022, Fast Company magazine honored Duty of Care with its World Changing Ideas award.

    • Received several other honors, including Society for News Design’s best homepage award, the Webby Awards’ best practices on a website, and MUSE Creative Awards’ best multilingual website award.

    • Paid its staff strong salaries and provided them with exceptional benefits and ongoing professional development opportunities.

    • Expanded its family leave policy to 16 weeks and added miscarriage leave and child care stipends; created options for staff to choose short-term and long-term disability, as well as life insurance.

  5. Explain why the achievements you have highlighted are unique or significant. If possible compare the achievements to the performance of other players in your industry and/or to the organization's past performance (up to 250 words):

    Total 209 words used.

Global Press believes world-class journalism requires world-class employment, which is why it pays its staff strong salaries and provides them with exceptional benefits, including industry-leading family leave.

This is also why it keeps its reporters safe through its award-winning Duty of Care program. After all, across the global media landscape, there is a demonstrated lack of security parity between local journalists and foreign correspondents. In an analysis Global Press conducted a few years ago, it found not only that security provisions for all journalists are extremely limited, but that security for local reporters is wholly absent from the global journalism landscape.

Global Press is so effective because of its extraordinary, all-women team. Of its six senior leaders, 100% are women and 50% hail from underrepresented groups. Of its global team of 25, 80% are women and 70% of the total come from diverse groups. 100% of its reporters are local, diverse women who represent the communities they cover.

There is no other organization in the world that recruits women journalists, trains them, employs them, and distributes their news stories to partners for local and global audiences, while also prioritizing their safety and security in any and all of the work they do. There is no organization like Global Press.
