What if a business could revolutionize the relationship between people, planet and profit? This is a business model consumers demand, and it’s already here.

For 70 years, the Savers® Value Village® family of thrift stores have run a proven, successful, triple bottom line company. Our mission is to champion reuse and inspire a future where secondhand is second nature. We’ve made a promise to affect the world for the better as we grow: to benefit local communities by partnering with non-profits, to benefit the planet, and to benefit our shareholders. People, planet and profit—that is our triple bottom line.

From the thrill of the hunt to the joy of decluttering, we help communities harness the power of reuse to keep clothing and household items around for years to come. We believe what’s good for people, communities and the planet, is also good for business. Thrift is proof the reuse economy works and is the future of retail.

The Savers® family of thrift stores is the largest for-profit thrift operator in the United States and Canada. We have over 320 stores in the United States, Canada, and Australia and 22,000+ team members who are engaged and committed to our mission.

  4. If you are providing written answers for your submission, you must provide an answer to this second question: Outline the organization's achievements since the beginning of 2022 that you wish to bring to the judges' attention (up to 250 words):

Environmental: It takes 700 gallons of water to produce one new cotton T-shirt, as much water as you’ll drink in 2 ½ years. To achieve the 2030 Paris climate objectives, 20% of garments worldwide must be traded through circular business models. Here is a snapshot of our impact:

    • Found a reuse for over 3.2 billion pounds of reusable clothing and housewares over the last five years
    • 270M+ secondhand items purchased by our shoppers [REDACTED FOR PUBLICATION]
    • 90%+ of supply is locally sourced; reducing emissions associated with production and distribution of the merchandise sold in our stores

Social: Paid our non-profit partners more than $530 million for secondhand goods, providing them with revenue to support their community-focused missions. We also invest in the training, development and advancement of our team members:

    • 72% of open salaried management positions filled by internal promotions
    • 58% of management roles held by team members identifying as female
    • 57% of U.S. workforce represented by diverse backgrounds and ethnicities

Governance: We promise to affect the world for the better as we grow: to benefit local communities, the planet, and our shareholders:

While community and the environment are intrinsic parts of our business model, over the past year we have taken additional steps to formalize and build an Executive-led ESG program as part of our commitment to continuous progress in these critical strategic areas for our company. For example, we have established an internal ESG Committee to help build our strategy and engaged a third-party climate change and energy consultant to calculate our Scope 1 and 2 emissions.

Our impact is multiplied by our model of paying our non-profit partners for all donated goods to create revenue they can use to help fund their missions. We are directly providing a mechanism for people to reuse goods that might otherwise go into a landfill, and secondarily generating revenue for our non-profit partners’ vital community programs and services.

On top of our direct and secondary impacts, we are using our scale and platform to educate the public and further encourage the practice of reuse. As interest in the secondhand market continues to grow, we will have the opportunity to elevate and define the thrift experience for decades to come because of our leadership and innovation.
