The PHUSE EU Connect 2023 clinical data conference was the stand-out event in the global pharmaceutical industry of recent years, if not the last decade.

PHUSE is a global non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting the use of informatics and data science within the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries.

We focus on facilitating collaboration among professionals, providing a platform for knowledge sharing and innovation, and fostering the development of new tools and methodologies to address challenges within clinical research – the vital process in bringing new drugs onto the global market.

Having started in 2004 with just ten members, we now are a global community of 12,000 professionals who benefit from annual conferences plus dozens of other events and networking opportunities, enabling pharmaceutical companies, regulators, and other stakeholders to stay updated on industry trends and best practice.

Held over four days in Britain’s second largest city Birmingham, our EU Connect 2023 conference brought together 671 delegates from 25 countries and 159 companies, including all of the world’s leading pharmaceutical corporations as well as regulatory authorities including the European Medicine Agency (EMA) and the UK’s Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).

The overall theme was Diversity, to encourage and inspire the sector to be more inclusive and offer more opportunities for all sections of the community.

Speakers included the Head of Diversity at the UK’s Channel 4 TV station, whose remit is to appeal to the tastes of a culturally diverse society; Welsh rugby legend Gareth Thomas CBE who was the first openly gay professional rugby union player; and Cathy O’Dowd, the first woman in the world to climb Everest from both sides.

In addition to the professional speakers, there were 125 unique presentations, six Hands-On Workshops, Discussion Clubs, panels, poster sessions and a large exhibition space, all housed in Birmingham’s iconic International Convention Centre (please see supporting video).

The presentations and research papers were of the highest calibre covering topics at the forefront of advances in the global clinical data industry including Connected Health & Machine Learning; Scripts, Macros & Automation; and Leadership Through Innovation & People Leadership & Management.

Feedback from EU Connect 2023 was outstanding – as can be seen in a supporting file of testimonials. “An incredible opportunity to immerse ourselves in a wealth of knowledge,” one delegate said.

The conference also provided the perfect setting for the launch of our new PHUSE Recognition Awards to celebrate the efforts and achievements of the many individuals who contribute their time and energy entirely voluntarily to our organisation.

In addition, EU Connect 2023 was our most environmentally sustainable event. Initiatives included:

    • No paper flyers.

    • No single-use plastic.

    • Ensuring the venue was energy efficient & carbon efficient.

    • Carbon offsetting for all PHUSE officials and volunteers with donations to World Land Trust to help protect the world’s most threatened species.

We also raised a substantial sum for the charity the Marfan Trust in memory of PHUSE co-founder John Hirst who died last September. The trust supports research into Marfan’s Syndrome, an inherited disorder.

The charity donation was made instead of gift vouchers for award category winners.

  4. Optionally, you may list creative and production credits for your event - a list of the people and organizations that contributed to its development:
