For over 50 years, Scooby-Doo has been a beloved icon, captivating audiences worldwide with its unique blend of mystery solving fun, teamwork, and gender equality.
In January 2022, the Canadian company MONLOVE embarked on a worldwide tour with the live production "Scooby-Doo! and The Lost City of Gold," a family musical with an impressive initial production value. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, including daily tests, mask-wearing requirements, and border crossings, the show successfully toured 19 cities across North America.
By mid-2023, the show had garnered high praise from industry leaders, including Warner Bros. This acclaim caught the attention of Abu Dhabi's MIRAL group, a leading developer of award-winning entertainment and leisure destinations and attractions. The MIRAL group, which owns many theme parks on Yas Island, approached MONLOVE with a proposal to bring their iconic family show to the region.
After months of meticulous preparation and hard work, "Scooby-Doo! and The Lost City of Gold" was scheduled to be performed on March 2nd and 3rd, 2024, at the renowned Etihad Arena, the largest indoor venue in the region. The production, comprising three containers of equipment, was shipped from Montreal, Canada. However, due to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, the cargo ship was rerouted to Antwerp, Belgium. This unexpected detour required the ship to navigate around Africa instead of passing through the Suez Canal to ensure the safe arrival of the equipment at its destination. Consequently, the show dates were rescheduled to April 12th to 14th, 2024.
At the beginning of April 2024, MONLOVE with 25 artists and staff arrived from various cities in Canada, including Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal, as well as from Taipei, Taiwan. The MONLOVE team collaborated with the local production company SLS from Dubai for sound, lights, and video, and with the Dubai-based promoting company Theory Eleven. MONLOVE’s ambitious goal was to recreate the entire show, with new technical equipment from the region, in just five days of setup and rehearsals. The show has the innovative particularity of featuring interactivity between the actors and the video mapping background.
On April 12th, the show premiered successfully and received widespread acclaim, delighting both young audiences and hardcore fans. Even the Abu Dhabi Royal Family attended the event. The production was hailed as one of the most complex and artistically superior family shows ever to grace the UAE region. This achievement underscores why the show is being presented for consideration by the judges of the Stevie Awards.
