Approximately 37,000 injuries occur each year among medical personnel while performing daily tasks. According to WHO data, as many as 37% of hepatitis B infections and 39% of hepatitis C infections diagnosed among health care personnel are caused by stabbings with equipment used in health care facilities. Nearly 70% of medical staff have injured themselves up to five times during their tenure, 40% of whom have not reported such an incident to their superiors. The World Health Organization indicates that for every 100 patients in hospitals, 15 patients in low- and middle-income countries, including Poland, suffer at least one healthcare-related infection during their hospital stay. Recognizing this problem, we decided to create a campaign to draw attention to the issues of raising awareness of the risks of injuries and pricks caused by unsafe medical equipment. It was crucial to pay attention to the safety of medical personnel and minimize the risk of pricks and injuries. We have started a system debate and have scheduled meetings with key decision-makers in the health system, parliamentarians and health institutions. We have started the "Safe Hospital is a Safe Patient" program, which certifies Polish hospitals that care about safety standards. Based on the data we collected, planned the release of the "Safe Hospital is a Safe Patient" report.

The goal was to change safety and quality regulations in the Polish health care system. It was crucial to consider the safety of medical personel and patients, as well as work on quality indicators and encourage hospitals to use safe equipment that would ensure safety in Polish medical facilities. Our strategy set a clear goal to reach out to policymakers, KOL’S, hospitals, the public opinion and most influential media and make it clear that changes are needed in the Polish health care system to give safety to medical staff and patients. It was necessary to provoke a public, systemic debate, as well as to draw the public’s attention to the serious problem of the low level of safety of medical personnel in Polish hospitals. It was necessary to pass laws and regulations that would change this. We have planned the release of the "Safe Hospital is a Safe Patient" report, which was key to communicating the problems and challenges of Polish medical facilities.
