CalmWave addresses the critical problem of alarm fatigue in ICUs, where excessive, non-actionable alarms lead to nurse burnout and reduced care quality. By employing Transparent AI, CalmWave filters out irrelevant alarms, ensuring only clinically significant alerts reach nurses. This innovation significantly reduces cognitive overload, allowing healthcare professionals to focus on critical care tasks, thus enhancing patient outcomes and nurse retention.
CalmWave combines real-time data analysis from medical devices and EMR with Transparent AI to intelligently discern and reduce unnecessary alarms in ICUs. Unlike traditional solutions, CalmWave's approach emphasizes transparency in AI processes, fostering trust and accountability in clinical settings. This allows for decisions to be easily understood and audited, aligning with healthcare regulatory standards. CalmWave not only represents a technological advancement but also a shift towards a quieter, more efficient, and human-centered healthcare environment.
The benefits of CalmWave can be attributed, in part, to our user-centric design and proactive engagement with the medical community. We not only introduces a new way of managing ICU alarms but also redefine the integration of technology in healthcare by maintaining a human-centric focus. CalmWave’s practical application of Transparent AI in a high-stakes environment like the ICU exemplifies a pioneering step in healthcare technology, making it a standout solution in improving both patient care and nurse well-being.

We are working with our first customer, the largest network of hospitals in Georgia, and one of the most highly regarded and innovative hospital networks in the country, to remediate alarm fatigue and objectively improve nurse retention for all eleven of their hospitals. We are on-track for an overall 80% reduction in non-actionable alarms. We are also applying for breakthrough innovation agreements with all six Hospital Group Purchasing Organizations (GPO) in the U.S.
In the U.S. alone, there are over 93,000 ICU beds in the US (and this is not even considering the additional NICU, PICU, ED, PACU, Progressive Care, and Telemetry unit beds). Over-alarming in the ICU, however, is not just a US-based issue. This problem exists in every hospital globally. The market size is incredibly sizable and attractive.
“As the VA’s artificial intelligence architect, AI companies are beating down my door. I’ve been working on alarm fatigue for twenty years and have never seen anything like CalmWave’s product.” (R. Spencer Schaefer, PharmD, Chief Health Informatics Officer (CHIO), Medical Informatics Data Science and Emerging Technologies (MInDSET), eHRM Pharmacy Council, Pharmacy Data Migration Lead, eHRM Acute Care Council Clinical Deterioration SME)
"While working in ICUs, my dreams would include the different alarms that I listened to during my shift (arrhythmia, vent, IV pumps, etc). It certainly made for less restful and restorative sleep. And then consider how these alarms are impacting patients and their ability to rest and heal when they're in the hospital. Kudos for working to address this issue!" (Experienced ICU Nurse)
