Freedom Boat Club has revolutionised the international boating industry since 1989 with its unique membership model for boat hire. Unlike traditional syndicate models, this model allows members to access diverse boat fleets across 400 global locations without ownership costs, maintenance, insurance, or storage. This innovative approach has significantly changed how people experience boating, making it more accessible and enjoyable for a broader audience.

The club debuted in Australia at the Sanctuary Cove Boat Show in 2023, establishing a strong presence on the Gold Coast. It has expanded to two locations: Sanctuary Cove and Marina Mirage. With an initial fleet of five boats valued between $190,000 and $220,000 each—including family-friendly pontoons and sleek fishing vessels—Freedom Boat Club's crafts cater to a broad range of maritime activities. The membership model significantly lowers financial barriers to boating for both new and seasoned boaters. Members can choose from various activities, from leisurely cruises to adventurous fishing trips, without the logistical or financial commitment of owning multiple boats. The Gold Coast club grew to 34 members in a year, a testament to our model's universal appeal and adaptability, which proudly makes boating accessible and enjoyable for everyone.

  4. If you are providing written answers for your submission, you must provide an answer to this second question: Outline the organization's achievements since the beginning of 2022 that you wish to bring to the judges' attention (up to 250 words):

    Total 244 words used.

Since the beginning of 2022, we have achieved significant success that we wish to bring to the judges' attention.

    Expansion of Membership and Inclusivity

    • We have successfully expanded our membership base, making boating accessible to a broader audience through a simple membership model and a diverse fleet of boats.

    • Notably, over 35% of our members are women, and 33% were new to boating before joining our club, showcasing our commitment to inclusivity and breaking barriers in the marine industry. This is particularly noteworthy given that, globally, fewer than one percent of seafarers are female, and only an estimated two percent are boat owners, according to the Australian Gender Equality Council.

    Education

    • We have provided comprehensive training to members of all skill levels, fostering a culture of lifelong learning and passion for boating.

    • We have helped 26 individuals gain their boating licenses and become proficient sailors.

    Youth Engagement and Skill Development

    • Our organisation has invested in the marine industry's future by offering real-world experience to young people considering careers in this field. For instance, 16-year-old team members working at our dock have gained unique life skills, developed a passion for the water, and enjoyed roles far more enriching than conventional teenage jobs.

    Employment and Growth

    • We have employed five individuals and are continuously growing, creating more opportunities within the marine industry.

    • Our commitment to innovation and training has broadened access to boating and strengthened the community by fostering a culture of empowerment and continuous learning.

  5. If you are providing written answers for your submission, you must provide an answer to this third question: Explain why the achievements you have highlighted are unique or significant. If possible compare the achievements to the performance of other players in your industry and/or to the organization's past performance (up to 250 words):

    Total 246 words used.

Our achievements are significant because they reflect our unwavering commitment to making boating more accessible, inclusive, and educational, setting us apart from others in the marine industry.

Accessibility: We make boat hire and usage more affordable, breaking down the financial barriers that traditionally restrict access to boating. This democratisation of boating allows a broader range of individuals to enjoy the benefits of being on the water.

Inclusivity: Our emphasis on inclusivity ensures that everyone can participate in boating regardless of background or ability. This focus on creating an inclusive environment stands out in an industry often seen as exclusive due to high costs and stringent entry requirements.

Comprehensive Training: We provide accessible skipper training, empowering individuals with the skills and knowledge they need to operate boats safely and confidently. This approach is less common in an industry where training opportunities can be limited and expensive.

Youth Engagement: We nurture the next generation of boating enthusiasts by actively engaging with young people. Our programs are designed to inspire and educate youth about the joys and responsibilities of boating, ensuring the community has a bright future.

Employment: By creating job opportunities and supporting career development in boating, we are helping to strengthen the industry’s workforce and stimulate economic growth.

Community Focus: Other players in the marine industry focus on increasing membership numbers and revenue without addressing accessibility, inclusivity, empowerment, and community development. This sets us apart from our competitors, even as a newcomer to the Australian boating community.

  6. You have the option to answer this final question: Reference any attachments of supporting materials throughout this nomination and how they provide evidence of the claims you have made in this nomination (up to 250 words):

    Total 40 words used.

A support document has been included in the application to provide further information on the company and founders, our history, the work we do, and our approach. It also outlines articles, our website, and social media links highlighting our work.
