Philip Morris International (PMI) is an international tobacco company that is disrupting its traditional business and leading its industry toward a future without cigarettes. Our new purpose, announced publicly in 2016 is to transform for good, delivering a smoke-free future by developing, scientifically substantiating, and responsibly commercializing smoke-free products that are less harmful than cigarettes and becoming a lifestyle, wellness, and healthcare company that has a net positive impact on society.

To date, we are the only major tobacco company to have committed to eliminating cigarettes, and we have already secured a leading position in the smoke-free category globally. Since 2022, smoke-free products represented approximately 35% of our total net revenues, and an estimated 18.5 million smokers had switched to our leading smoke-free product and stopped smoking.

Transforming from a cigarette company into a science- and innovation-driven business requires more than replacing one product with another. PMI understands that fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace is imperative to achieving our vision. Our customers are diverse, so it is imperative that our workforce be reflective of that. Only by attracting and retaining a diverse community of innovators can we solve the challenges we face within and outside our organization.

  4. If you are providing written answers for your submission, you must provide an answer to this second question: Outline the organization's achievements since the beginning of 2021 that you wish to bring to the judges' attention (up to 250 words):

Measuring diversity is a relatively simple task. Inclusion is far more nuanced. In March 2021, PMI launched Inclusive Future, an initiative to tackle the complex and previously unanswered challenge of accurately measuring inclusion. The campaign was designed to help our company devise more effective ways to assess, promote and therefore foster an inclusive workplace and advance the discourse surrounding inclusion in global business and civil society.

PMI entered into a research partnership with the International Institute for Management Development (IMD) to study how inclusion is currently measured and how this should evolve to drive impact. The yearlong initiative also included an international survey conducted by Povaddo and a variety of engagement activities hosted in partnership with BlogHer, exploring and advancing the latest thinking.

Our research culminated in the publication of our Inclusive Future report in spring 2022. It presents groundbreaking research, practical guidelines, and valuable direction for international companies that work across diverse geographies, markets, and cultures, helping them to effectively measure and continuously improve inclusivity within their workplaces.

We also partnered with BlogHer to create an Inclusivity Resource Hub, which we continue to update. Recommended reading supplements our original content to deepen the audience’s awareness of key topics, celebrate those who are advancing inclusivity, and build bridges between PMI and communities of practice. In addition, we launched Inclusivity Dialogues, a series of panel discussions streamed live on the hub, featuring prominent thought leaders discussing issues of DE&I. These events also continued through 2022.

  5. If you are providing written answers for your submission, you must provide an answer to this third question: Explain why the achievements you have highlighted are unique or significant. If possible compare the achievements to the performance of other players in your industry and/or to the organization's past performance (up to 250 words):

    Total 238 words used.

While companies of all types and sizes track some areas of inclusion via engagement surveys, many employees don’t feel included, and systematic approaches to measure progress on inclusion remain elusive. Specifically, the PMI-commissioned international survey revealed:

    • 51% of respondents have felt excluded in their current or former workplace.
    • 27%—increasing to 36% of those in nonmanagement positions—do not feel safe and comfortable speaking up on inclusion issues.
    • 73% revealed they’d be more likely to stay in their current job if they felt more included, and 85% said that feeling included at work motivates them to give their “best self.”
    • 82% think it’s important to measure inclusion, but only 43% say their organization is doing so.

The Inclusive Future report highlighted a need for international companies to thoughtfully explore and effectively address six dimensions of inclusion: psychological safety, uniqueness, fairness, participation, belonging, and authenticity. Furthermore, our research recommended a groundbreaking pulse tool, the inclusion Net Promoter Score (iNPS), which PMI started testing last year. In 2023, we will pilot additional qualitative methods that surfaced from our research, including face-to-face, open-ended conversations with employees and the companywide sharing of inclusion metrics.

The Inclusivity Resource Hub was a 2021 Top 100 Winner of Pressboard’s Best Branded Content awards, and our original content on the hub averaged 27,000-plus page views, with the most popular articles reaching over 70,000. Our event series resulted in 68,000-plus replays and 76% attendee retention.

  6. You have the option to answer this final question: Reference any attachments of supporting materials throughout this nomination and how they provide evidence of the claims you have made in this nomination (up to 250 words):
