The electricity distribution company Osmangazi Elektrik Dağıtım AŞ (OEDAŞ) provides service with more than 1,200 employees in five cities (Afyonkarahisar, Bilecik, Eskişehir, Kütahya and Uşak) covering an area of approximately 50,000 square kilometers.

Acting with the mission of being an environmentally responsible company while conducting its operations with the principle of ensuring safe and sustainable electricity supply, OEDAŞ also develops projects that touch every aspect of life, from the protection of cultural assets to gender equality. OEDAŞ employees voluntarily participate in parts of these projects that involve social responsibility.

Due to OEDAŞ's line of business, approximately 65 percent of its employees work in the field. These teams frequently witness the difficulties experienced by stray animals in every location, from city centers to villages.

It is estimated that 10 million animals live on the streets in Turkey. In addition to struggling with shelter, hunger, climate and environmental conditions, stray animals can lose their lives, sustain injuries or become disabled due to human-induced factors such as mistreatment or being hit by vehicles.

OEDAŞ aimed to improve the living conditions of stray animals in its region as a result of the notifications received from its employees. To this end, OEDAŞ collaborated with the Animal Rights Federation (HAYTAP), one of the most trusted NGOs in Turkey on animal rights, and launched the Can Dostlar (True Friends) social responsibility project. HAYTAP is an organization whose opinions are taken into consideration by the state. HAYTAP, which has a high level of public awareness, has a total of around 750,000 followers on social media channels.

  3. If you are providing written answers for your submission, you must provide an answer to this first question: Briefly describe the nominated organization: its history and past performance (up to 200 words):

OEDAŞ then launched the project in May 2021.

In the first phase, a total of 2 tons of food was placed in food containers placed at 200 locations in five cities. In cooperation with HAYTAP, food continues to be regularly left in these food bowls. As of June 1, 2023, the amount of food donated exceeded 10 tons.

In October 2021, a treatment room was opened in cooperation with HAYTAP and Tepebaşı Municipality in Eskişehir. Since the opening of the treatment room, more than 4,000 stray animals have been treated, including tumor and ophthalmic surgeries. In addition, approximately 2,000 sterilization operations have been performed and continue to be performed.

In 2022, based on an idea of the employees, the scrap materials in the warehouses of OEDAŞ were transformed into shelters. The shelters were placed in front of OEDAŞ's provincial directorates in five provinces before April 4, World Stray Animal Day. The food and water containers placed inside the shelters are regularly cleaned and filled.

While OEDAŞ took a step that raised awareness across the country with this project implemented in its service area, this success was also recognized abroad. At the UK-based Best Business Awards, OEDAŞ received the Best Business award in the Corporate Social Responsibility category for its True Friends project.

Dogs and cats on the streets have adapted to living together with humans, even though they face difficulties. As stated in the Animal Protection Law in Turkey, "The lives of stray animals should be supported in the same way as owned animals." On the other hand, the fifteenth  Sustainable Development Goal, "Life on Land", is based on the protection, improvement and sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems. OEDAŞ continues its project to help stray animals lead healthy lives in line with these articles.

True Friends (Can Dostlar) is a social responsibility project fully owned by OEDAŞ and budgeted every year. The project, which initially started with the aim of distributing food to stray animals, was soon expanded to meet the treatment and shelter needs of animals, with the aim of opening a treatment room in each of the cities served.

The conversion of scraps into shelters improves the living conditions of stray animals and contributes to OEDAŞ's zero waste target. OEDAŞ, the first and only electricity distribution company in Turkey to publish a sustainability report, to calculate and to verify its carbon footprint and publish a CDP report, aims to reduce its waste by 50 percent by 2030 and achieve zero waste by 2050 in line with the "Responsible Consumption and Production" title of the Sustainable Development Goals. The Best Business Awards jury also stated that the conversion of scrap materials into shelter within the scope of the True Friends project was a brilliant idea.

  6. You have the option to answer this final question: Reference any attachments of supporting materials throughout this nomination and how they provide evidence of the claims you have made in this nomination (up to 250 words):
