In the last two decades, Jeffrey Tarayao’s thought leadership in the non-profit sector must have reached every nook and cranny of the Philippines.  The humanitarian and development programs he has led strike at the heart of a community’s need so that they can become more productive members and contributors to Philippine society. Over the years, he ensured that “inclusion” and “inclusive development” are the fundamental principles that guide in the design, development, and implementation of the corporate social responsibility and sustainable development programs he has led. He was able to do this full-time in the Manila Electric Company as Chief Corporate Social Responsibility Officer and President of One Meralco Foundation (since 2011), as well as his involvement and leadership in several socio-economic, development, communications, church-based and youth organizations.  These enabled him to demonstrate thought leadership in development issues such as: poverty eradication through community empowerment, improved productivity through energy access, youth engagement for development and education for social responsibility and development. These resulted in strategy transformation, leadership development and more active community engagement of organizations.   The cornerstone of his thought leadership is all about “journeying with communities,” by strengthening stewardship and self-reliance to benefit the marginalized.

  4. If you are providing written answers to the questions for this category, you must answer this second question: Outline the nominee's thought leadership achievements since 1 January 2021 that you wish to bring to the judges' attention (up to 250 words):

    Total 243 words used.

Like most of the world’s non-profit leaders, Tarayao’s immediate attention in the past two years focused on addressing the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic. Despite this, he continued advocating for long-term development issues such as inclusion, improved productivity and youth engagement.  He also leveraged thought leadership to strengthen Meralco’s position as a responsible corporate citizen as demonstrated in the following:

    • Respected “go to” opinion leader and program innovator in corporate social responsibility and sustainable development programs in the Meralco group, including some CSR programs in the MVP group, one of the biggest conglomerates in the Philippines.
    • He serves in the advisory councils of development organizations such as the League of Corporate Foundations and the Coalition for Better Education. He is active in social development groups such as the Philippine Business for Social Progress, Association of Foundations, Philippine Council for NGO Certification and Caritas Manila.
    • He is often interviewed on media (interviews increased by 80% from 2021 to 2022) for development initiatives he led and its impact on sustainability and social development.  In One Meralco Foundation alone, the media value increased by 75%from 140-million Philippine Pesos (USD 2.5M) in 2021 to 245-million Pesos. (USD4.4M)
    • He is a sought after speaker on corporate community partnerships, sustainable development and youth empowerment and spoke in a number of fora, seminars and conferences in the past two years.
    • He committedly devotes time to teaching corporate social responsibility, good governance and sustainable development to university students weekly.
  5. If you are providing written answers to the questions for this category, you must answer this third question: Explain why the achievements you have highlighted are unique or significant. If possible compare the achievements to the performance of other players in your industry and/or to the nominee's past performance (up to 250 words):

    Total 245 words used.

At a young age of 43, Tarayao has earned a unique reputation as an expert in corporate social responsibility and in social development programs.  Currently as President of one of the biggest corporate foundations in the Philippines, he proved to be a significant contributor in his being a respected yet unassuming leader in the practice, earning him a niche while majority of his contemporaries focused on business, entrepreneurship and government service. Tarayao has maximized this energy, openness to collaboration, on-the-ground interaction with communities and engagement with the youth to build a solid understanding and capability to understand issues, influence policy in development work, model outstanding community projects and communicate the impact to inspire thousands of Filipino workers for development and the youth.  His ideas and thoughts demonstrated that the marginalized has a role in enabling development for their own communities. For these he was recently awarded by his alma mater, the University of Santo Tomas (the oldest existing university in Asia) with its highest alumni recognition: the Outstanding Thomasian Alumni  for Service to Humanity.

The other significant achievement of Tarayao is his personal commitment to education and the youth.  He often speaks in student conferences, youth trainings and has been teaching marketing students on social responsibility, good governance and responsible marketing.  While thought leadership can always be seen in mainstream communications (cases written, media stories, speeches, conference lectures), Tarayao is passionate about education, a strategic investment on the next generation of leaders for the country.
