The annual KPMG Global Cyber Day Initiative is a Global Corporate Citizenship program aimed at educating young people on the importance of cyber security and internet risk, as part of KPMG member firms' commitment to supporting our communities. Our vision is to empower half a million students by 2025 with the cyber literacy to safely navigate the digital world, and moreover contribute to the KPMG Global Firm’s IMPACT goal of improving the social mobility of 10 million disadvantaged young people by 2030.
Our Global Cyber Day coincides with International Cyber Security Awareness Month, an internationally recognized campaign that promotes cyber security among organizations and the public, providing resources to be more secure online. During the month of October, KPMG cyber security professionals help students, teachers and parents, become more cyber aware through interactive classroom sessions, both in person and virtually, on safe use of personal data, social media, cyber bullying, online gaming and phones. In addition, we develop a campaign profiling our efforts and sharing insights to the community on how to keep themselves and our young people safe online.
Since its inception in 2017, our initiative has reached more than 370,000 students from no less than 1560 schools that have participated in the program. In 2021 alone, our educational sessions reached 100,000 students. In October 2022, this number rose to 120,000 students who were involved in either one of our instructor-led or virtual instructor-led trainings. We are especially proud of the 66 countries and territories across the Americas, EMEA and ASPAC that participated in the KPMG Global Cyber Day in 2022. All sessions were led by teams of KPMG cyber security professionals, who either visited schools and presented to students in person or instructed virtual sessions. In more detail, students were educated on the importance of the following cyber security topics and associated risks:
- how to protect their identity online
- explain secure login and logout practices
- describe how to use social media safety
- recognize and manage cyber bullying
- summarize how to use phones smartly
- describe how to participate in online gaming safety
- protect themselves against cyber attacks
- identify do’s and don’ts of remote learning
- manage online content.
Our 2022 Global Cyber Day facilitated events featured presentations, discussion topics, lesson plans, interactive activities as well as quizzes to help boost retention. These were accompanied by additional reference materials, such as tip sheets for parents that build awareness on cyber safety for children and protecting children against internet risks, as well as quick reference guides that aim to build cyber security awareness for the community as a whole.
Last but not least, on our Get cyber smart - KPMG Global website one can find a brief video introducing the KPMG Global Cyber Day initiative.
