ESHORE – The Safest Shore Connection created and patented by Mark Smith, and launched in May 2022, and is an extension of his current business SET Maritime & Electrical, formed in 2011.

Mark Smith is an Electrical Contractor, Accredited Marine Surveyor and a Marine Engineer with over 40 years’ experience. Throughout his career, Mark has worked with Bluewater, Offshore, and Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) units.

This breadth of experience has allowed Mark to develop a unique and highly sought-after skill set, which sees him provide the following services for:-

    • Technical advice in all aspects of compliance
    • Dynamic Positioning Trials
    • Auditing of Safety Management Systems
    • An Expert Witness.

More recently Mark’s work has taken him into the Domestic Commercial Vessel (DCV) industry where he specialises in electrical compliance for Plan Approval and Surveys of vessels, ensuring they are safe through being compliant to appropriate conventions. It is during this time Mark discovered that shore connections (specifically the connection box for ship to shore electricity supply), were not compliant to the requirements of Australian, ABYC and IEC Standards, and in most cases presented a real safety risk because of polarity monitoring test was not a momentary test.

  4. If you are providing written answers for your submission, you must provide an answer to this second question: Outline the organization's achievements since the beginning of 2021 that you wish to bring to the judges' attention (up to 250 words):

    Total 237 words used.

The most notable achievement since 2021 is witnessing hard work come to fruition by reaching the manufacturing phase and creating a device that is robust and fit for purpose.

A simple solution to electrical safety hazards, encompassing several years of working through prototypes to manufacture the device that is available worldwide. The device has been refined during the development phase incorporating suggestions from meetings with regulatory and government bodies, industry representatives, target market and peers, where at every stage, encouraging feedback was received on the necessity of the device in the marine industry.

Ultimately what has been achieved is a revolutionary new “Plug and Play shore connection device that is fully compliant and addresses serious safety risks. It can be used anywhere in the world with minor modifications, has a reverse polarity switch and momentary Polarity test with an interlocking device.

Since 2021 ESHORE has been Patented, Trademarked and was officially launched in 2022.

Most recently the third generation of ESHORE has been developed. A Printed Circuit Board that offers a more flexible option regarding installation and has remote operation capability. It also can be easily concealed making it more aesthetically pleasing.

Additionally, Mark has won the following awards for ESHORE.

    • 2022 Australian Business Award for Product Innovation
    • 2022 WorkSafe Queensland Award -“Best Solution for an Identified Electrical Issue’.
    • 2023 Asia-Pacific Stevie Awards
      • Bronze Award Achievement in Product Innovation
      • Gold Award Innovation in Consumer Products & Services.
  5. If you are providing written answers for your submission, you must provide an answer to this third question: Explain why the achievements you have highlighted are unique or significant. If possible compare the achievements to the performance of other players in your industry and/or to the organization's past performance (up to 250 words):

    Total 227 words used.

ESHORE is the only shore connection device that among other features, possesses a momentary polarity test. This alone is unique and patented and is the point of differentiation from what is currently on the market.

Notwithstanding the most important feature being that of reducing risk of electrical hazard, ESHORE has an interlocking system that prevents power to be connected if polarity was incorrect. In such cases ESHORE will save boat owners time and money on these incorrect connections and not having access to electricity, by having a switch that allows you to reverse the polarity and use the electricity safely while you wait for an electrician.  Additionally, a unique side feature of ESHORE is it has indirectly resolved the issue of electrolysis (corrosion) of the vessel, thereby protecting the boats near you at the marina and your investment.

Furthermore, ESHORE’s circuit arrangement is designed to be Fail Safe. This means that if power was lost, the device fails to safe mode – it will de-energise. Additionally with the automatic testing function, if shore power was lost due to an outage, the device will automatically undertake the testing and re-connect to the shore power.

The development of a printed circuit board has taken ESHORE to another level providing the same safety features but now giving the boat owner the flexibility of where it is installed on the boat.

  6. You have the option to answer this final question: Reference any attachments of supporting materials throughout this nomination and how they provide evidence of the claims you have made in this nomination (up to 250 words):
