The benefits of international trade come at a high price. The constant flow of goods around the globe drives up greenhouse gas (GHG) levels and contributes to climate change. At DGF, we recognize that the transport sector plays a vital role in fighting global warming and accelerating sustainability across the logistics industry.
International transport accounts for 14% of global carbon emissions. That figure could double by 2050 if demand for freight shipping continues to rise as expected and no action is taken.
We understand that there’s no way around sustainable logistics and we are committed to help the world transition to the carbon-free future. But we do not just say we are ‘green’. We deliver. As a part of our comprehensive sustainability roadmap, we launched DHL GoGreen Plus - an add-on product to our core air and ocean freight services replacing conventional fuels in aircrafts and vessels with sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) and sustainable marine fuels (SMF) and thus significantly reducing the emissions of the transport.

Sustainable Fuels are currently the best available option for immediate emission reduction within Air- and Ocean freight. We want to facilitate its availability (and affordability!), but we can’t drive up demand alone, so we are joining forces with like-minded stakeholders.
We make the sustainable fuels available to our customers through our GoGreen Plus service. The service allows customers to reduce 100% of their Tank-to-Wake (TtW) and 80-90% Well-to-Wake (WtW) carbon emissions. They choose the scope, and we facilitate the fuel switch and verification process and provide CO₂ reduction certificates, verified by an independent third-party , which document the Scope 3 emissions reductions.
In Air Freight, we joined United Airlines’ Eco-Skies Alliance which bought 3.4 million gallons of SAF in 2021, eliminating about 31,000 metric tons of GHG emissions. Over the next years, we’ll leverage our partnership with Air France KLM Martinair Cargo to purchase 33 million liters of SAF and save 80,000+ tons of carbon. We also joined Cathay Pacific’s SAF program, to drive demand in Asia.
In Ocean Freight, we partnered with Hapag-Lloyd to ship18,000 TEU of DHL's volume using advanced biofuels, equivalent to a reduction of 14,000 tons of WtW CO2-emisisons. With purchase of approximately 60 million liters of SMF from GoodShipping, DGF will further reduce 180,000 tonnes of TtW-CO2e until 2024.

DGF was the first forwarder to introduce the concept of insetting (sustainable fuel switch) to the market in a joint whitepaper with the Smart Freight Center. And we have been instrumental in developing a cross modal book & claim accounting framework for insetting solutions that plays a pivotal role in enabling transition to sustainable fuels for the entire industry and avoid green-washing fears. As industry standards are just being developed, we always adhere to the strictest drafts regarding calculation, accounting of emission reductions or usage of sustainable fuels.
We want to facilitate availability and awareness of the importance of carbon-neutral shipping, that’s why we started offering (as the first forwarder) Ocean Freight LCL GoGreen Plus for free in 2021.
Our SAF/SMF deals outlined above provide access to more sustainable fuel than any other forwarder has. This way we are not only playing a key role in driving up demand for SAF/SMF but are also enabling our carrier & fuel production partners to do the necessary investments to scale up the production. Lastly, we are also able to provide our customers the shippers with volume and price guarantees that no other forwarder can provide
The enthusiastic response from our customers worldwide has been nothing less than encouraging. Hewlett Packard Enterprise named DGF their HPE Logistics Sustainability Partner of the Year in 2022. Our customers including Merck, Lindex, Grundfos and others speak highly of our joint sustainability initiatives and GoGreen Plus service.
