    After years of low engagement with an old provider and unrelevant content, Checkers and Rally's new Learning Management System called Crazy Good Learning (via Schoox) was introduced to all 850+ restaurants and 12,000+ employess on October of 2020. Along with the user-friendly Crazy Good Learning platform, positional certifications like the newly updated Sandwich Positional Certification released in January 2022 help continue to drive up user engagement.

    With the challenges of staffing and restaurant turnover, keeping good Team Members and training them well is crucial! In a fast-paced environment where employees can sometimes be placed in a position without the proper training, or can be trained inconsistently depending on the situation, it’s very important that Checkers and Rally’s restaurants are provided with consistent training that’s fun, engaging, effective, and efficient.

    Turnover is a key metric for Checkers and Rally’s. As we discovered, simply having Team Members watch videos or read materials simply wasn’t enough. Ensuring Team Members are engaged and properly trained on building and packaging sandwiches, in turn, means that our Guests receive hot, delicious food made exactly how they ordered it.  And statistics prove that given the opportunity with a good experience, Team Members are more likely to stay because they feel they are set up for success. The new Sandwich Positional Certification provides a consistent and well-balanced learning experience that prepares new employees to not only to gain knowledge of work the Sandwich Station, but to experience it virtually and better prepare Team Members for the Sandwich line.  This new learning experience includes a narrator with a fun and interesting sense of humor, a journey through the fictional Checkers and Rally’s Institute of Sandwich Perfection (CRISP), as well as a sandwich simulation that allows learners to build virtual sandwiches before jumping on the Sandwich Station.  This new and fun Sandwich Certification Program is not only entertaining but is helping to create engagement as well as retain our Team Members and Managers.

    The Sandwich Positional Training program was created to be a blend of online modules and hands-on practice in both a virtual and real-world environment. Online modules are a mixture of videos, examples, quizzes, and activities to ensure understanding. Since all 850 Checkers and Rally’s restaurants have a small footprint and limited space, positional certification training is delivered on mobile devices. Learners can complete the program on a tablet, which they can take to the station when necessary.

    With turnover being a key metric for Checkers and Rally’s, our main goal is to create engagement and reduce turnover. By keeping certification training relevant and easily accessible on our training mobile devices, logins and engagement has doubled year-over-year, and the mobile logins have almost tripled! Training engagement is measured using the Schoox reporting tool that tracks web and mobile logins. It is clear that our users are getting more comfortable with our training system, enjoying the content, and utilizing mobile learning.

    Data Results from Schoox on Mobile and Web Logins Year-over-Year:

    • 2020-2021 Total Logins: 14,883
    • 2021-2022 Total Logins: 43,572
    • 2022-2023 Total Logins: 87,304

    In addition to our LMS logins and engagement, by updating our certifications and improving training to be more fun and relevant, we are not only seeing a downward trend and improvement of 18% for team turnover, but also seeing a downward trend and improvement of 21.4% for general managers compared to this same time period last year.

    The Sandwich Positional Certification training is an experience for Checkers and Rally’s Team Members. Front-line workers and Ops Service leadership have worked tirelessly together with the training team to create modules that focus on the most important information and present it in an interesting, engaging, streamlined way, so learners can begin working their position quickly, effectively, and efficiently. By employing different learning techniques such as videos, hands-on activities, quizzes, and simulations, we are also creating a fun learning experience that’s increases Team Member LMS engagement all while helping decrease employee turnover.
