In 2008, Safelite AutoGlass®, the nation’s largest provider of vehicle glass repair and replacement services, hired Steve Miggo as the senior vice president of human resources and leadership development. Since, he has been a key driver behind Safelite’s cultural transformation.

In years past, Safelite didn’t regularly consider “people” as a key part of their business strategy. That’s not to say people didn’t matter. In fact, Safelite boasted a highly tenured workforce with a strong work ethic and loyalty to the company. But thinking about people strategically in terms of leveraging talent and engagement to grow the business was not in practice.

Therefore, Miggo launched “People First” as a strategic initiative for the business with the objective to “drive business performance by having an obsessive focus on having talented people who are inspired to deliver great results.”

Miggo realized that bringing the concept to life would require a cultural transformation from top to bottom. The role of the leader would need to be redefined. The talent bar would be raised. Thinking and behaviors would need to change at both the individual and organizational levels. People would need to understand and engage in the journey. Performance measures and rewards would need to align with the destination. And so, work began to build an integrated talent management platform, designed to attract, develop, engage and retain the talent needed to support Safelite’s growth strategy.

While our business objectives are “the what,” our Core Competencies are “the how” and are ultimately what sets us apart from the rest. During the rollout of People First, employees were provided the Core Competencies Roadmap. This brochure was provided to all associates to describe required skills and behaviors for all positions and is shared with new associates during the on-boarding process.

Next, over 1,000 leaders participated in custom-designed leadership development workshops. These programs were developed as group learning sessions with interactive activities designed to promote discovery learning and sharing best practices among high-performing leaders.

In addition to leadership development programs, all employees have access to monthly e-Courses, through iLearn, an online resource that can be accessed by all associates at work or at home, to support learning and development around the Core Competencies and People First initiative.

Miggo’s leadership has inspired a culture of feedback. He has introduced a new employee engagement program tied directly to Safelite’s Core Competencies and People Pledge. The results of his HR strategies are now evident: during a year when engagement scores are dropping by an average of 2 points in companies across the country, Safelite delivered a 5% increase to reach 76% overall engagement, which is within the top 25% of Best in Class industry results.

Previously, Miggo served as the associate vice president of HR at Limited Brands for three years and as vice president of HR for Elmer's Products Inc. for seven years.

His experience includes working in various operational and human resources capacities for Plaskolite Inc. and Sumitomo Electric Company. He also gained considerable entrepreneurial experience acquiring, operating, and ultimately selling his sole ownership in Advanced Moldings Inc., a consumer and industrial products manufacturing company.

Miggo has a bachelor’s degree in organizational psychology from Ohio University and a master’s in business and labor relations from The Ohio State University.
