Often, people who don’t have flood insurance will say they don’t need a policy—but extreme weather is becoming more common, and flooding can happen to anyone, anywhere. In the past five years alone, nearly half the counties (49%) in the United States experienced a flood event.
The National Flood Insurance Program’s Success Stories is a video campaign by FEMA that showcases the resiliency of real-life residents in Vermont who recovered from flooding in 2023 by having flood insurance and taking proactive mitigation efforts, detailing the stories of their recovery from flood disasters. The video features breathtaking nature photography and a testimonial from a Vermont state climatologist who warned of the need for insurance to safeguard against ever-increasing flooding risks.
Target viewers—non-policyholders in the U.S. who are at some risk of flooding but likely to underestimate it—were prompted to learn about coverage options by visiting floodsmart.gov.
The video was posted on FEMA’s YouTube channel, along with a 15-second version for social media and a 60-second version for Vermont cinemas. It was shared in various newsletters, including FEMA’s January 2025 internal monthly communications report. To date, the video has garnered more than 1.3 million impressions.
