The Stefani and Lazzareschi families founded Sofidel, a paper product company in Italy in 1966. Over several years, Sofidel expanded its manufacturing capabilities and began exporting products to other countries.
Innovation and sustainability have always been high priorities for Sofidel. In 2008, it published its first Sustainability Report and became a member of the WWF International Climate Savers program. In fact, it was the first Italian manufacturing company to do so, and the first tissue company to do so in the world. This program reinforced Sofidel’s mission to reduce direct and indirect CO2 emissions and effectively manage its water usage in the production process. During this time, Sofidel pivoted to collecting raw materials from responsible sources.
In 2013, Sofidel set high expectations for itself to reduce CO2 emissions by 11% and in 2018 committed to a 40% reduction in scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions from the pulping process by 2030. In 2019, it set the goal to reduce plastic waste in production by 50% by the year 2030. More recently, it adopted a “Net Zero by 2050” goal to further show its dedication to helping the planet.

As mentioned, Sofidel is highly committed to providing consumers and AFH customers with high-quality, sustainable paper products. To increase transparency, it’s been focused on achieving third-party certifications and in 2022, 85% of its products were eco-labeled. Futhermore, in 2022, reports show Sofdiel successfully reduced its plastic waste by 38.2% compared to 2013 levels. Also in 2022, Sofidel decreased its CO2 emissions by 15.7% compared to 2018 and used 100% certified pulp – 84.39% of that pulp was certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).
Other achievements include the launch of the, “Together We Plant the Future – Developing Biodiversity Corridors Towards a More Sustainable Future” with Suzano in the Amazon rainforest. This three-year investment will help educate those living in the Amazon on sustainable planting and business practices and will build a biocorridor to help fight deforestation in a vulnerable area of the world.
In 2024, it earned the #1 spot for a second consecutive year in Morningstar Sustainalytics’ report in the Household Products category. This year it also again earned high rankings on CDP’s Supplier Engagement Rating Report including A- rating which
In 2023, Sofidel earned sustainability awards from the Business Intelligence Group, for making sustainability an integral part of its business practice.
In 2022, Sofidel’s HyTech Seas toilet paper and paper towel dispensers earned the ISSA Show Innovation Award for actively reducing over a ton of plastic waste in the ocean with each dispenser made.

When considering Sofidel competitors when it comes to the Morningstar Sustainalytics rating, there truly is no comparison. For example, Sofidel earned the #1 spot in the Household category and also received an ESG rating of 14.4 meaning a low risk for environmental, social and governance (ESG) harm. By comparison, Georgia Pacific, another manufacturer of paper products for commercial and household use received a severe ESG risk rating of 47.3. Furthermore, another competitor, Kimberly-Clark was ranked #62 in the Household category and received a medium ESG risk rating of 28.6.
These comparisons further highlight how Sofidel’s sustainability accomplishments are strides ahead of its competitors in the paper industry. Another indicator of why Sofidel’s sustainability efforts are so significant is that its CDP rating for 2024 is above the sector average rating.
