Nomination Title: Heal

Heal is on a mission to transform the $4 trillion healthcare industry through its technology-empowered, home-centric primary care infrastructure that has improved health outcomes, lowered healthcare costs, and delighted patients. Heal has provided over 250,000 appointments to date, proving that safe, easy, and timely access to quality care at home is entirely possible.Heal has received over $200 million in venture capital funding, including a $100 million investment from Humana in July 2020. This funding was used to expand Heal’s services to four new markets in 2021. As a result of Heal’s rapid and continued growth, the company was named to CNBC’s Disruptors List in June 2020. In September 2020, co-founders Nick Desai and Dr. Renee Dua were recognized as winner of the TiE50 award for Heal’s innovation and disruption of the healthcare space. Heal was named to the 2020 Deloitte Technology Fast 500 in October 2020 and one of Inc.’s “Best in Business” in December 2020. Finally, Dr. Renee Dua was also named one of Inc.’s Top 100 Female Entrepreneurs of 2020.

Amidst COVID-19, Heal’s ability to provide house calls and telemedicine services has helped to treat patients by reducing risk of exposure to potential infectious diseases present in doctors’ offices, urgent care centers, and hospitals. The last year was one of incredible growth, innovation, and impact, with Heal launching a number of technical innovations and future-looking programs to expand patient services, especially amid the pandemic.

In 2020, Heal experienced a 540% increase in demand, resulting in a significant expansion of its telemedicine and doctor house call services. Currently, Heal delivers approximately 8,000 telemedicine appointments monthly while also doing about 33% more house calls since the pandemic began.

New technical innovations include Heal Hub – a patient-operated device that Heal doctors can use to track patient symptoms and vitals. The device allows near-real-time, 24/7 integration of diagnostic health data – so Heal doctors can deliver proactive care.

Heal also launched teletherapy services in California and Georgia in 2020 to help patients struggling with mental health issues at an affordable price. Heal’s human-centric programs also extended to include the launch of Heal Pass in 2020 – an initiative that brings house calls and telemedicine to the estimated 27 million Americans who lost their health insurance along with their jobs because of COVID-19. Heal Pass allows Heal’s services to operate with a fixed monthly fee, eliminating copays, deductibles, and insurance. Patients using Heal Pass enjoy personalized, concierge house calls and telemedicine, without incurring high costs that might be expected to accompany on-demand care.

Heal co-founders Nick Desai and Dr. Renee Dua believethe primary care system is struggling as doctors waste about 65% of their time on bureaucracy, leaving only an average of 7 minutes per patient and thus creating potentially life-threatening gaps in diagnosis and treatment. Heal has overcome the healthcare industry’s “last-mile” problem — where 35% of US patients are unable to get to the doctor’s office for reasons such as transportation, cost and accessibility — bringing access to over 110,000 patients.

House calls were nearly extinct by the end of the 20th century but home-based primary care (HBPC) is experiencing a re-emergence as a cost-effective strategy that also dramatically improves the quality of healthcare delivery for patients. In the seven years since Nick and Renee launched the platform, Heal has amplified the success of other HBPC models through its focus on frictionless care, house calls by unhurried doctors, data-driven care, social determinants of health, and seamless care delivery. Moreover, unlike other HBPC providers, Heal delivers a comprehensive range of primary and urgent care services for the entire family, from infants to seniors. Heal’s HBPC program can save payers an estimated 20% of healthcare expenditures for high-utilizing members with multiple chronic conditions.Since launching just seven years ago in 2014, http://heal.com/">Heal has delivered over 250,000 appointments to patients across the country, driving more than $88 million in healthcare cost savings and reducing preventable trips to the emergency room and urgent care by 71%.
