Summary

Web Shield organises a two-day networking conference for risk management professionals working in card acquiring and beyond. Now in its fourth year, RiskConnect attendance has increased year-on-year with a high rate of returning delegates and positive feedback on the conference content and networking opportunities.

Challenges

Under card scheme rules, acquirers who provide card acceptance facilities to merchants are financially and legally responsible for their merchants’ transactions at the time of the sale and in the future. Acquirers must ensure their merchants process only legal card sales in both the buyer’s and seller’s country. The cross-border nature of e-commerce introduces new risks in this regard, so deciding which merchants to on-board is crucial.

This is a particularly niche area within the card industry unaddressed by mainstream risk management conferences. It can be difficult for acquiring risk management professionals to establish contacts and share information, whether formally or informally, among peers and those in adjacent industries. This is especially problematic, as the industry is dynamic and changes to national, regional or card scheme regulations can have a significant impact on acquirers. Risk management professionals need to keep abreast of trends and external risks for competitive advantage.

About RiskConnect

RiskConnect 2019 gave delegates the opportunity to:

Speakers included Pulitzer prize-winners Bastian Obermayer and Frederik Obermaier, the first investigative journalists to work on the Panama Papers data leak, plus, a 30+year veteran from the Federal Trade Commission and speakers from law enforcement, regulators and both major international card schemes.

Results

Attendance levels have increased year-on-year. RiskConnect is a global conference which attracted attendees from 28 countries (2018: 21 countries). 200 delegates from 95 different organisations attended the 2019 conference, a 40 percent increase on 2018 attendance levels.

There is a high rate of returning delegates. This is partly because RiskConnect is in its fourth year and firmly established on the conference calendar. And partly due to the high-quality speakers whose content is pitched appropriately to the audience, namely in-depth knowledge-sharing without sales pitches.

The next RiskConnect conference is already scheduled for November 2020.
