As part of Walgreens vision to reimagine local healthcare and wellbeing for all, in 2022, we accelerated efforts to bring together more innovative solutions, technology and the strength and capabilities of our core retail pharmacy business to further extend our healthcare solutions. We’ve also made strategic investments to fuel innovations that are helping us to build the pharmacy of the future:
Micro-fulfillment centers
Walgreens opened eight micro-fulfillment centers this year to drive operational efficiencies and cost savings. These centers have been instrumental in automating administrative tasks in retail pharmacies allowing our pharmacists to spend more time focused on patient care. Existing facilities already support >20% of our retail footprint.
Walgreens Health
We’re assembling a network of industry-leading providers including VillageMD, Shields and CareCentrix, as well as key payor partnerships, to create a more personalized and seamless patient journey. This integrated ecosystem allowed us to directly impact >2 million lives, surpassing our 2022 goal early, and we’re targeting 10 million lives by 2025.
Clinical Trials
Our new clinical trials business is creating a flexible model for hybrid trials. Supported by cutting-edge technology and leading industry partners, we are introducing trials to patients across a range of therapeutic areas and geographies.
Pharmacy Renewal
We’re creating a new, modern platform leveraging the latest software technology using historical data to predict and replenish inventory most efficiently. We’re currently dispensing more than 1 billion prescriptions each year while providing a range of immunizations and high-touch care to our specialty pharmacy patients.

In 2022, we’ve continued to look at how to make healthcare more equitable while improving access to quality, affordable services. Through investments and innovations in all areas of our business, we’re transforming to build the pharmacy of the future, improve the clinical trial experience and reimagine healthcare.
We’re also laying the groundwork for new areas of pharmacist care. These include testing and treating routine illnesses, providing comprehensive care for chronic conditions, solving medication adherence barriers and continuing to address health inequities in many of the communities we serve.
From an industry perspective, these initiatives provide further support and proof points for legislative efforts that would give all pharmacists healthcare provider status – so that they can provide an even wider range of services to help ease the burden on other providers and our healthcare system as a whole. Walgreens has played a leading role in advancing these efforts.
Finally, we’ve expanded access to primary care services faster than any other pharmacy retailer. These include 120 VillageMD at Walgreens co-locations now open, our acquisition of the remaining stake in Shields to expand our capabilities in the specialty pharmacy sector and our majority share acquisition of CareCentrix enabling us to play an even greater role in coordinating patient transitions from the hospital to the home.
While undergoing rapid expansion, we are also building a more agile system that aligns with what consumers need, highlighted by our partner and payor agnostic model, unlike some competitors in the healthcare space.
