Village Farms International, founded over 35 years ago, is the first and longest-tenured operator of hydroponic vegetable greenhouses in the United States. The company has developed and operated multiple greenhouses with a current footprint of 260 acres under glass throughout the United States and Canada. Their brands of tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers have been a mainstay in kitchens for over 30 years. Recognizing the potential of the global cannabis market, the company entered the newly formed legal Canadian cannabis industry in 2018, sustaining top-selling products and brands, and achieving the status as the only profitable cannabis company in the country last year.

Village Farms has long stood at the forefront of innovative agricultural practices, demonstrating that sustainability and profitability can coexist harmoniously. With a firm commitment to reducing energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, and overall environmental impact, Village Farms leverages cutting-edge technologies and clean energy solutions to set a new standard for sustainable farming.

    Sustainable Farming Mechanisms

    Land & Water Use
Village Farms has revolutionized agriculture by significantly reducing resource consumption while maximizing output. Their advanced greenhouse systems use 97% less land compared to traditional outdoor farming, yet they achieve 20 to 30 times more crop yields. Water efficiency is also a pinnacle of their operations, with greenhouses utilizing 86% less water than outdoor growing. This is made possible through innovative practices like rainwater collection and recirculating drain water, which supply over 80% of their water needs. Blackout curtains further enhance sustainability by preventing light pollution, ensuring operations align with environmental preservation standards while maintaining optimal growing conditions for crops.

    Natural Sunlight
Full-spectrum sunlight is harnessed to grow crops for nearly 40% of the year, reducing dependency on artificial lighting and significantly lowering energy consumption. By optimizing greenhouse designs to maximize sunlight exposure, Village Farms ensures crops receive ample natural light for healthy growth. Supplemental lighting is deployed only when necessary, ensuring efficient resource use without compromising plant quality or sustainability.

    Growing Naturally
The company’s cultivation system is designed to grow as naturally as possible, using clean, natural growing mediums and an integrated pest management system that eliminates the need for chemical pesticides or heavy metals. By focusing on natural methods, Village Farms ensures a pure, high-quality product while protecting the environment and promoting sustainable agricultural practices.

    Clean Energy Initiatives

Village Farms set out to realize a bold vision: to harmonize large-scale agriculture with environmental stewardship. To bring this vision to life, the company established Village Farms Clean Energy (VFCE), a dedicated division focused on creating sustainable energy solutions while supporting its agricultural operations.

At the heart of this initiative, Village Farms implemented a comprehensive clean energy initiative at its Canadian greenhouses in Delta, British Columbia, effectively transforming landfill gas (methane) from the City of Vancouver’s main landfill into renewable alternatives. This was a transformative agreement with B.C.’s largest municipality.

Over the past year, the company expanded its sustainability initiatives with an RNG (Renewable Natural Gas) project through its Clean Energy operations in Delta, B.C. in Canada. Leveraging state-of-the-art technologies, this project purifies and converts methane to high-demand RNG. Now fully operational, RNG is available for use by residences and businesses in the community.

Village Farms’ sustainable business model demonstrates how innovative solutions can drive business success while also contributing to a greener future and safeguarding the planet for generations to come. Through all these initiatives combined, Village Farms effectively reduces greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 475,000 metric tons of CO₂ annually. This reduction is comparable to removing over 100,000 vehicles from the road or supplying energy to 51,300 homes for a year, underscoring the significant environmental impact of the company's clean energy efforts.
