Traditionally, National Senior Health and Fitness Day is an annual opportunity for the promotion of regularized physical activity in older adults’ daily lives while simultaneously showcasing thousands of local organizations offerings in aiding that overall effort. Celebrating 29 years of shared success, it is commonly crowned the nation’s largest older adult health event. At UPMC for Life, UPMC Health Plan’s Medicare Program, we’ve proudly served as the Pennsylvania state sponsor since 2008— hosting locations throughout the commonwealth strategically determined by surrounding membership demographics and connected community partners. Welcoming nearly 1,500 guests on that final Wednesday of May in 2019, we could never have imagined how much everything could or would change come that following fateful year.
Forced to a virtual format in 2020, our team was determined to get safely and smartly back into our communities. National Senior Health and Fitness Day had become a treasured tradition for us as much as it had for our members and communities they called home. So, with the transformational arrival of effective vaccines, and ever-evolving arsenal of medical science on how to best protect ourselves and our members, 2021 served as a much-needed return to form, fitness and (most importantly) fun! Ensuring we picked locations best positioned for proper socially-distanced spacing and open-air ventilation while focusing on points of interest that are accessible to the largest userbase, we finalized on four: the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium, Riverside Park, Lakemont Park and the Strausstown Senior Community Center.
Much like any change, with its coming requires clear communication and the warm conveyance of welcome. UPMC for Life needed to ensure our members, and public at large, were aware of this anticipated switch back to an in-person platform. Digital and physical fliers served as easily dispersible info sheets, while a more intimate mailing to members invited them and their closest friends to join our annual celebration on the 26th of May. Our dedicated webpage provided a deeper dive into the finer details as press releases were pushed out to major media outlets reminding older Americans of the upcoming event nearest them.
UPMC for Life’s team of over 50 staff and volunteers worked across the state’s four locations to lead exciting activities aimed at engaging attendees in exercises, health screenings or just genuinely enjoyable face-to-face conversation. Following the all-important guidelines for low impact, classes of Total Body Fitness, Tai Chi and Cardio Drumming were featured, along with the high-paced and always popular Zumba Gold (a modified class for active older adults that recreates classic moves at lower intensity). In case clothes became a bit sweaty, all received cozy t-shirts commemorating the day. Many enjoyed self-guided walks around the park or zoo trails as the animals enjoyed an afternoon stretch themselves. As for much of our programming, a concierge team was on hand to help schedule vaccine and mammogram appointments.
612 seniors shared that special day in May with us, and while it was not necessarily our largest turnout, or most marketed, it will undoubtedly go down as the most special and societally significant because during a time of dire desperation for friendship and downright fun, we were able to deliver.
