Nomination Title: Dan Springer, CEO

1. Tell the story about what this nominee achieved since January 1 2013 (up to 525 words). Focus on specific accomplishments, and relate these accomplishments to past performance or industry norms. Be sure to mention obstacles overcome, innovations or discoveries made, and outcomes:
When Dan Springer joined Responsys as President and CEO in 2004, Responsys was solely a provider of email marketing software. Shortly after joining Responsys, he saw an opportunity to transform the company’s offerings to serve all the emerging interactive channels – email, mobile, social and the web.

Under his direction, Responsys has become a leading marketing cloud software and services company that helps organizations manage their digital relationships and deliver the right marketing to their customers. Responsys has become known for its commitment to identifying and addressing customers’ needs and within the company, a high regard for employee satisfaction is evident.

The company implements individualized performance plans that managers review with all 1,000+ employees at least once every six months. Bonuses are linked to customer success and an employee survey. Additionally, Dan is active on the company’s Work.com community and publicly acknowledges individuals that have gone above and beyond.

Dan also makes an effort to visit all of Responsys’ global offices (16 of them in 9 countries) once per quarter and meets with employees to take a measure on their workloads. He speaks with employees that are either under worked or over worked to figure out a plan to meet in the middle. He is absolutely a hands on chief executive that knows what’s going on throughout his global organization.

Under Dan’s leadership, Responsys has established relationships with some of the world’s largest brands, such as Jet Blue, City Sports, REI, Nordstrom, Sears, Southwest Airlines, Virgin America, Allstate, LinkedIn and MetLife. For the third quarter of 2013, total revenue increased 27% to $51.7 million, up from $40.5 million for the third quarter of 2012. This represented the third quarter in a row that revenue increased by 25% or more. Responsys also raised 2013 annual revenue guidance from $195-$198 million to $201-$203 million.

Dan’s dedication to innovation has led Responsys to be positioned in Gartner’s Magic Quadrant for CRM Multichannel Campaign Management for six consecutive years. In 2013, Responsys was named a Visionary, which Gartner describes as companies that “provide a strong vision for the campaign management market, or excel in advanced or emerging areas such as digital marketing.” The company was first named a Leader in Forrester’s Email Marketing Wave shortly after Dan took over the company – a position it has maintained ever since.

The company has also continued success in a number of areas under Dan’s direction including: global expansion, new executive hires and thought leadership. Over the past year, Responsys has seen tremendous growth globally, particularly in the APAC region. Responsys has grown its executive leadership team by adding numerous new hires to help drive the company into the future of the marketing cloud. For thought leadership, this year, Responsys teamed up with Forrester to announce new research which showed that companies who still engage with customers using an old, campaign-centric methodology will be at a disadvantage to those embracing a new, customer-centric approach called marketing orchestration.
