Nomination Title: Dr. Paul Jacobs, CEO
1. Tell the story about what this nominee achieved since January 1 2009 (up to 500 words). Focus on specific accomplishments, and relate these accomplishments to past performance or industry norms. Be sure to mention obstacles overcome, innovations or discoveries made, and outcomes:
The recent year has been noteworthy for Dr. Paul Jacobs. Widely known as an
innovator in the technology landscape, he was elected to chairman of the board
in March 2009, and has been Qualcomm’s chief executive officer since 2005. He is
regarded as a key architect of Qualcomm’s strategic vision and has been
spearheading the Company’s efforts to develop and commercialize mobile
technology breakthroughs that have contributed significantly to the growth of
both Qualcomm and the wireless industry in general.
Over the past year, Dr. Jacobs has been actively driving Qualcomm’s efforts to
develop and bring to market wireless technology and chipsets for applications
beyond mobile telephony, enabling a host of personal devices for entertainment,
computing and information. The fact that he was asked to give his first keynote
speech at CES - regarded as one of the world’s most important consumer
electronics shows - in January 2010, is a testament to his efforts, and that
Qualcomm is making an increasing impact on consumer electronics. His keynote,
considered a success by the media and CES attendees alike, was recounted by
Forbes’ Taylor Buley and was blogged about in real-time by Barron’s Eric Savitz,
among others.
The various awards and rankings Qualcomm received in 2009/2010 are further
testament to his leadership. In 2009, Qualcomm was ranked #9 on FORTUNE’s 100
Best Companies to Work For, #2 on FORTUNE’s World’s Most Admired Companies- in
the Network and Other Communications Industry, #7 on Fast Company’s list of the
Most Innovative Companies and #28 on Barron’s 100 Most Respected Companies. This
success was widely acclaimed within the industry and portrayed Qualcomm as a
leader in the technological landscape. Dr. Jacobs also received the 2009
Industrial Pioneer Award from the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society. He was
recognized by Institutional Investor for the 2010 All-America Executive Team:
Best CEO, first place in the Telecommunications category.
Internationally, Dr. Jacobs chairs the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda
Council on the Future of Mobile Communications. He was also selected by the
White House to be a member of the U.S. – India CEO Forum.
Like most of its peers, 2009 was a challenging year for Qualcomm as the global
economic crisis affected demand and the value of its securities portfolio and
investment income. In addition, Qualcomm’s settled a long-running legal dispute
with Broadcom in 2009 which adversely impacted its financial results, but
eliminated uncertainty, employee distraction and costs related to protracted
litigation, and therefore positively perceived by the Company’s stockholders and
customers.
Despite these challenges, Qualcomm’s operating performance remained strong,
driven by continued growth in demand for 3G devices, execution in their chipset
business and disciplined management of operating expenses. Qualcomm’s annual
fiscal 2009 revenues (GAAP) of $10.42 billion, met guidance set at the end of
the 2008 fiscal year. During this time, internal cost cutting measures, which
included Dr. Jacobs and Qualcomm’s president Steve Altman, taking voluntary pay
cuts, helped the Company avoid the significant lay-offs seen elsewhere in the
sector.
