Nomination Title: Marvell® ARMADA® 1500 series System-on-Chip (SoC) platform (88DE3100)
Tell the story about this nominated product or service (up to 525 words). Describe its function, features, benefits, and performance to date:
Just a decade ago, a state-of-the-art television included a 35-inch tube, weighed a few hundred pounds and delivered 480p images in a square format. Today’s TVs are thinner and lighter, yet wider, and deliver better, high-definition images.
That said, consumers are growing unsatisfied with single-function devices. Expectations are high for today’s digital home, and therefore the next step in the evolution of televisions will be the proverbial ramping up of their IQs. By 2015, the number of “smart” or Connected TVs is expected to grow to more than 75% of TVs sold across the globe. Manufacturers have begun signing deals with a growing list of content providers, including newspapers and magazine publishers, online commerce sites and a wide variety of user-generated and other online video sites.
Instant, high-quality multimedia and a customized, personalized experience are in high demand. Whether it’s 3D streaming video, gaming, or connecting with friends, the devices that deliver the experience need to provide seamless connectivity and plenty of processing power. Another challenge of today’s user experience is that content is partitioned into two separate worlds: traditional cable/satellite television and web based content.
With Marvell’s innovative ARMADA 1500 series System-on-Chip (SoC) platform (88DE3100) , these two experiences can be combined into one, allowing users to experience a multitude of HD content anytime and anywhere - all on an HD television. Where traditional devices fall short, Marvell’s ARMADA 1500 series SoC platform enables PC-like processing power to support browsing functionality with support for key elements like Flash, decodes various formats of media (audio, video and images), allows an immersive viewing experience for all forms of content, powers a seamless and “transparent” connectivity between various connected devices in the “home ecosystem”, and enables an extremely intuitive and easy-to-use user interface that permits the user to watch whatever content he or she desires on any connected display within the home. Consequently, this is why Marvell’s ARMADA 1500 is also the main enabler of the Google TV 2.0 and 3.0 platforms.
Marvell’s ARMADA 1500 has a set of unique features that enable this immersive digital entertainment experience. With its high performance ARM compatible dual core CPU, it is able to power the latest search engines, such as Google, as well as render content from Netflix and YouTube while also enabling a seamless user interface utilizing Marvell’s 3D graphics Qdeo™ processing engine. Additionally, Marvell created a unique chip architecture that allows users to access broadcast cable as well as web content from one device, all at an effective price point and low power consumption.
Ideal for OEMs and ODMs looking to offer consumer electronics manufacturers, service providers, and their customers a more immersive and high-performance experience that is unmatched by competitors, Marvell’s latest HD Media SoC platform has been deployed in several form factors: Google TV and Android TV enabled televisions, Blu-ray players and set-top-box.
