Nomination Title: Visionary Public Art
The date on which this nominated production was first distributed or otherwise made public: February 11, 2020
The Kenneth Rainin Foundation’s Open Spaces program launched in 2017 to support temporary place-based public art projects that engage communities.
Our inaugural grantees created three projects that addressed gentrification, unequal air quality and systemic oppression.
Our objectives with this video series were to:
Document the projects.
Showcase the type of work we fund through this new grant program.
Convey the impact of public art.
We created a 6-minute video featuring all three grantees and a 1-minute video for each project.
Seeking to uplift the artist’s voice on these sensitive topics, we provided a video producer to work directly with the artists to determine which stages of the project were appropriate to film. A professional writer also interviewed them about their projects, the community engagement process, the lessons learned and the impact of their work.
We released the series of videos accompanied by written pieces in February 2020. Since our audiences were rightfully preoccupied with COVID-19, we did not implement a heavy advertising plan. With all things taken into consideration, we’re happy with the success we’ve seen so far:
11.5k views of the videos
618 pageviews of the written stories
