Nomination Title: General Electric

Tell the story about what this nominated company achieved since January 1 2010 (up to 500 words). Focus on specific accomplishments, and relate these accomplishments to past performance or industry norms. Be sure to mention obstacles overcome, innovations or discoveries made, and outcomes:

The past year has proved to be an exciting one for General Electric (GE) as the
company continues its tradition of innovation with new, breakthrough
technologies spanning areas like Molecular Medicine, Advanced Propulsion, Cell
Manufacturing, Energy Conversion, and Sustainable Energy. Since January 1, 2010,
GE’s more than 2,800 researchers from the company’s Global Research Centers have
pioneered several key achievements:

        •     Thin Film Solar Panels (March 2010/ April 2011) – GE’s researchers spent the
past year working to deliver the kind of cost and performance attributes that
will one day make solar power mainstream. GE’s Thin Film Solar Panels have been
independently certified as the most efficient publicly reported milestone for
the technology. GE intends to manufacture the record-setting solar panels at a
new U.S. factory larger than any existing solar panel factory in the country today.

        •     High-Tech Laser Welding System (April 2011) – GE unveiled a high-power hybrid
laser arc welding system that will dramatically increase speed at which
industrial products can be made and assembled.

        •     Advanced Dual Battery System (December 2010) – This breakthrough could help
accelerate the electrification of bus fleets and other larger, heavy-duty
vehicle fleets.  The GE team successfully demonstrated a dual battery system on
a zero tailpipe emissions hybrid transit bus that pairs a high-energy density
sodium battery with a high-power lithium battery. In addition to optimizing
performance, a dual system can reduce the cost of a battery by up to 20%.

        •     Energy Smart LED (October 2010) – The energy smart LED bulb was the first
omnidirectional LED bulb engineered to replace old fashioned incandescent bulbs.
The bulb casts light in all directions making it vastly more efficient,
requiring 77% less energy and lasting over 22 years with normal use.

        •     WattStation (July 2010) – The WattStation is a fast level 2 device for
charging electric vehicles at home or on the road. WattStation significantly
decreases time needed for vehicle charging and it uses Smart Grid technology,
allowing utility companies to manage the impact of electric vehicles on the
local and regional grids.

        •     Nucleus Energy Manager (July 2010) – This innovative gateway device enables
communication between a home’s smart meter and its networked devices and
appliances. Nucleus collects and stores home energy consumption and estimated
cost data in near real-time, then displays the information in a simple way on a
home computer, providing consumers with a more efficient way to manage their
energy consumption.

        •     Cancer Mapping Technology (July 2010) – A GE study gave way to a revolutionary
technology known as ‘cancer mapping’ that enables pathologists to see more
characteristics of a particular cancer than ever before. This technology has
been called the “holy grail” in oncology with the hope that it will
significantly improve the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

Global Research has been the cornerstone of GE technology for more than 100
years. The team’s advancements to-date prove that they are taking on the world’s
toughest challenges and are continually shaping the world with groundbreaking
innovations – one idea at a time.
