Four years ago, Elanco Animal Health began a transformation journey, starting with the announcement to separate from Eli Lilly and Company, its parent company, and go public/complete an IPO and acquisition of Bayer Animal Health (BAH) which doubled the size of the company.

After successfully re-building its IT infrastructure from the ground up as part of the separation while completing the largest acquisition the Animal Health industry has seen to date all amid a global pandemic, Elanco IT was faced with fully integrating the people, processes and systems used by our colleagues who joined from BAH.

Project Mustang was started in 2021 as the next phase in the journey to address the business problems that arise when joining two companies.

    • Inconsistent customer experience
    • Productivity challenges for employees globally as BAH employees worked in two systems with different processes and applications
    • Heightened operational costs in managing two systems

To guide this work, a cross-functional global team developed a plan to design, implement and stabilize changes with minimal business impact. The scope of Project Mustang was defined in three buckets:

    • Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP): Moving from:
      • Two ERP systems to a unified ERP system for the whole enterprise
      • Sub-optimal customer experience: dual invoices, separate orders, separate billing, etc. to a harmonized customer experience
      • Two sets of financial and management reporting, rebate management systems, and SOx controls to a single set of financial and management reporting, rebate management systems, and SOx controls
      • Separate and disconnected supply chain planning view to a consolidated manufacture view for supply chain planning
    • Business Applications and Data Integration (non-ERP): Moving from:
      • Duplicate functional Commercial, Manufacturing, Quality, R&D, and Regulatory applications to a single set of applications across combined business for all business processes
      • Multiple reporting outputs to consolidated reporting
      • Varying business processes in HR systems - Workday and SAP MiniMaster and manual GL Posting from WD to SAP S4 across geographies to unified business processes (Payroll, T&E), Automated GL Posting
    • Infrastructure and Site integration: Moving from:
      • Two Help Desks with routing based on application to single Help desk for all Elanco employees
      • Separate network across Elanco and BAH sites to single Elanco network for all sites and users
      • Separate Identity for BAH applications to single Identity for all Elanco applications
      • Laptops and mobile devices setup with core software required for operations (~3000 BAH users with BAH devices, ~1000 BAH users with Elanco devices) to all PCs and mobile devices reimaged with Elanco software

The Mustang program is expected to deliver significant [REDACTED FOR PUBLICATION] business impacts from operating as One Integrated Elanco, including:

    • Better serving our customers. Integration of customer application and data equips customers to buy from our entire portfolio seamlessly with one account, providing our commercial organizations with comprehensive insights to serve customers and identify additional needs more efficiently.
    • Collaborating more effectively across functions and geographies to improve the employee experience. As a result of operating in two systems, inefficient systems and processes have been a top dissatisfaction on the last two voice-of-employee surveys. Unifying platforms and processes make it easier to work together, eliminating the need for the workarounds to collaborate across two separate environments.
    • Lowering costs, enabling us to invest in our innovation and growth. Project Mustang reduces the costs of running virtually every aspect of our business, creating savings that can be invested to drive our future innovation and growth.
    • Providing the foundation to further transform our business. With One Elanco data, systems and processes, we are able to continuously enhance and improve how we work through automation, unlocked data accessibility and achieving 95% cloud adoption. We are now poised to further transform our business and continue our digital transformation journey.

    • Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP):
