With 99% of the U.S. population living somewhere where the night sky is obscured by light pollution, we identified an opportunity for the Appalachian Mountain Club, the nation's oldest conservation and recreation organization, to establish itself as the leading voice in elevating understanding of the impact of light pollution. We kicked off the “See the Dark” public awareness campaign with a video to educate audiences on the impact of light pollution. The three children featured in the spot – like 99% of the U.S. population – live in a place where the night sky is obscured by light pollution. They travel from the city and its artificial lights to the woods of Maine, where they finally can see thousands of stars and experience the wonder and beauty of the dark sky.

This video was distributed online and aired as a PSA on public access stations across New England. It was paired with a classroom-based program and inspired 1,100+ downloads of our free teachers’ guide to help students learn about light pollution. The video sparked a greater appreciation of dark skies and of Appalachian Mountain Club’s conservation and stewardship efforts.
