Capital Insurance Group® (CIG®) is a leading property and casualty insurer in the Western U.S. The 127-year-old company has evolved from a small collective of farmers to over 400 employees working out of five offices across four states. Over the past few years, the company has undertaken a major technology transformation effort to modernize its technology systems. This includes upgrades and updates to improve customer and employee experience, the migration of major systems to the cloud, and cybersecurity enhancements.
The Development Team at CIG is being nominated for delivering these vitally important technology projects, and for their resilience, collaboration, and purpose-driven innovation. The team embraces the challenge of building connections across dispersed teams, solving complex technical problems, delivering innovative products, and bringing forth solutions that align with the company’s goals. Their work reflects not only their technical expertise but also their commitment to fostering relationships, learning, and providing tools that truly serve the organization.
The team began 2023 with the release of an interactive tool designed to help independent agents (CIG’s customers) more easily quote insurance policies, as well as better understand the impacts of policy changes. This tool allows agents to better explain cost impacts of changes to policies to both prospective and existing customers (CIG policyholders). The result has been improved transparency and trust in CIG and empowering consumers to have the information they need to make important financial decisions.
Next, the team completed a major system upgrade that resolved critical system issues and positioned the company for moving to the cloud. This foundational work was critical to ensuring CIG could adapt and innovate in the future.
The team addressed system stability and supportability ensuring that CIG’s document management system was secure, scalable, and aligned with the company’s needs. These foundational projects demonstrated the team’s ability to deliver results that safeguard the organization’s technology infrastructure.
Mid-year, the team faced a unique challenge: migrating a data center during an office relocation. Through careful planning and strong coordination, they ensured a seamless transition of critical systems, minimizing disruption to business operations. This effort highlighted the team’s ability to collaborate effectively and deliver under pressure.
Over the summer, the team completed the Guidewire ClaimCenter Implementation, a green-field project that replaced a custom-made claims system with a state-of-the-art Guidewire Cloud instance. This transformation significantly improved claims processing, providing employees and customers with a more seamless experience.
To close out the year, the team released a sophisticated rating model that allows agents to offer more precise and competitive pricing for business owner insurance policies. This initiative further demonstrated the team's commitment to supporting agents with tools that make a difference.
In 2024, the team continued their hard work. They completed a major Software as a Service (SaaS) migration, transitioning major IT systems (PolicyCenter, BillingCenter, and Contact Manager) to the Cloud. This nine-month effort improved system resiliency and enabled CIG to rapidly adopt new features, ensuring the organization remains agile and competitive in a fast-changing market. They also worked with business to release an enhanced rating tool for personal lines insurance products. By enabling tailored pricing, this initiative empowered agents with advanced features to meet the unique needs of customers.
The Development Team's journey over the past two years is more than a list of technical achievements; it's a story of resilience, growth, and connection. Each project represents not only an accomplishment but also a bond built among team members and a solution that directly servces CIG's mission to be the most valued carrier for independent agents and policyholders through an unwavering commitment to extraordinary service, innovative products, and risk management solutions.
The team's efforts have positioned CIG for long-term success, ensuring the company has the necessary tools, systems, and agility to meet the needs of policyholders, prospective customers, agents, and internal business teams. Their work exemplifies CIG's core values and reflect a deep commitment to support the business's goals.
