Betacom was established in 1991 as a wireless infrastructure provider to AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon. Having completed 800+ large-scale design and deployment projects, Betacom saw an opportunity to pivot its business model to embrace the end-to-end delivery and deployment of high speed, low latency networks using private 4G/5G technology that is ideal for future-looking Industry 4.0 initiatives such as robotics, autonomous vehicles, and AR/VR. In 2019, Johan Bjorklund, a long-time industry wireless veteran, took over as CEO and drove new interest and funding for Betacom, raising $15 million from private investors, including former T-Mobile executive Braxton Carter.
Johan drove his vision for a new business arm that today is leading the private 4G/5G wireless networking market. These networks have incredible potential to revolutionize the way that many industries, including transportation, manufacturing, and logistics, conduct business and accelerate progress as they move into Industry 4.0. This next phase of economic evolution focuses heavily on the intersection of interconnectivity, automation, artificial intelligence, machine learning and real-time data, and promises to completely change global business through automation.
In May of 2021, the company rolled out the first fully-managed private wireless service, 5G as a Service (5GaaS) by taking a unique approach to the market. It began offering private networks as a service - from plan and design through install and operation. Betacom 5GaaS is an end-to-end service that gives U.S. enterprises exclusive access to cost-effective, high-performance and lightning-fast 5G networks, with network management delivered via its cloud-based Security and Service Operations Center built on ZeroTrust design principles.
For the enterprise customer, this means lower costs, less complexity, no data usage fees, and a network that works reliably. Enterprises can focus on their mission-critical business and Industry 4.0 applications without worrying about continuous always-on connectivity.
Examples of this technology include:
Deployment at DFW Airport
Betacom worked with DFW to fulfill its requirements for its “Connected Ramp” private wireless trial initiative, incorporating modern connectivity into its operations. Betacom’s managed service allowed DFW to control the performance criteria and the data – while Betacom managed the private network for the airport with full visibility.
Betacom 5GaaS allowed DFW to run their baggage handling application without interference. Betacom integrated DFW’s current software baggage handling client into Betacom’s solution with CBRS-enabled scanner devices. The solution offered easy integration with existing DFW technologies while speeding up baggage handling and reducing lost baggage. An average of ten minutes was shaved off the turnaround time for each flight, a 22% improvement. As a result, DFW issued an airport-wide RFP for a Comprehensive Wireless Platform that will include private wireless using CBRS spectrum.
Deployment at MxD (Manufacturing)
The company recently announced a partnership with the Digital Manufacturing Institute and the National Center for Cybersecurity in Manufacturing (MxD), an incubator for digital manufacturing technologies, in which Betacom was selected to provide the organization’s Chicago headquarters and Factory Floor Lab with a private 5G network.
The fully managed network facilitates collaboration among some of world’s largest manufacturers, including Siemens, Rolls Royce and John Deere, as they test their latest innovations toward realization of the benefits of Industry 4.0.
Deployment at Teltech (Warehousing/Logistics)
Teltech Group, a nationally-recognized leader in logistics/supply chain services, has deployed Betacom 5GaaS to automate its 200,000 square-foot warehouse in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. The warehouse also will become a showcase for warehouse automation and Industry 4.0 IoT capabilities, with recent advances in robotic, drone and forklift automation enabled by private 4G/5G.
Native American and woman-owned Teltech consolidated four Dallas/Fort Worth-area warehouses into a single warehouse in 2020, developing the entire space and supporting systems from scratch. The Betacom private 4G/5G network supports the company’s NetSuite ERP system and enables enhanced scanning capabilities that greatly increase efficiencies in material receiving, order fulfillment and shipping.
As a result of this pivot, the company increased revenue by 4X to $135 million by the end of 2022.
